CHAPTER-2 UNITS AND MEASUREMENT (ASSIGNMENT)

1) Read the given case and answer the following questions:

The dimension of a physical quantity is defined as the powers to which the

fundamental quantities are raised in order to represent that quantity. The seven
fundamental quantities are enclosed in square brackets [ ] to represent
its dimensions. Dimensional Formula is the expression which shows how and which
of the base quantities represent the dimensions of a physical quantity. Dimensional
Equation is an equation obtained by equating a physical quantity with its dimensional
formula.

i) Which one of the following represents the correct dimensions of the coefficient of
viscosity?
(a) [ML-1T-2]
(b) [MLT-1]
(c) [ML-1T-1]
(d) [ML-2T-2]

ii) Which of the following statements are true for dimensional analysis?

1. The functional relationship between dependent and non-dependent variables

can be expressed into dimensionless terms by dimensional analysis
2. In model testing, it reduces the number of variables into three numbers
3. It is used to change the theoretical equation into dimensionless form
4. It helps to convert the units of quantities from one system to another system

a. (1), (2) and (3)

b. (2), (3) and (4)
c. (1), (3) and (4)
d. (1), (2), (3) and (4)

iii) Which of the following is not a primary quantity?

a. Mass (M)
b. Temperature (θ)
c. Time (T)
d. None of the above

iv) Which of the following quantities has the dimensions [M 0 L0 T 0]

a. Density
b. Stress
c. Strain
d. Strain Rate
2) The rate of flow (V) of a liquid through a pipe of radius (r) under a pressure

gradient (P/l) is given by V= πPr4/8lἠ, where ἠ is coefficient of viscosity of liquid.

Check whether the formula is correct or not. (V=Volume/sec)

3) The frequency (√) of an oscillating drop may depend upon radius (r) of the drop,

density(ῤ) and surface tension (S) of the liquid. Deduce the formula dimensionally.

4) When 1m, 1kg and 1min are taken as the fundamental units, the magnitude of force is

36 units. What will be the value of this in CGS system?

5) Write the dimensions of a and b in the relation, P= a-t2

bx

Where P-pressure, x-distance, t-time.

6) Find the dimensions of a/b in the relation, P=ax+bt2, where P is pressure, x is distance

and t is time.

7) An artificial satellite of mass m is revolving in a circular orbit around a planet of mass

M and radius R. If the radius of the orbit of the orbit of satellite be r, then period of

satellite is T= 2∏ √r3/g. Check the consistency of the relation by the method of

dimensions.
