Instruction: Carefully read, think, analyse, and answer all questions correctly. The use of telephone(s) is
prohibited. Cheating in any form or manner is punishable.

(1) A bar of length 1000 mm and diameter 30 mm is centrally bored for 400 mm, the bore diameter being 10 mm
as shown below. Under a load of 30 kN, if the extension of the bar is 0.222 mm, what is the modulus of elasticity
of the bar?

(2) As shown below, a round steel bar of a length of 400 mm and a diameter of 15 mm at the middle portion is
subjected to an axial tensile force of 17 kN. What should be the diameter at the outer collars if the stress in
the collar is not to exceed 40 MPa? What is the magnitude of ‘a’ if the total extension in the bar is not to
exceed 0.17 mm? E = 210 GPa.

(3) A vertical bar 4-metre-long and of 2000 mm2 cross-sectional area is fixed at the upper end and has a collar at
the lower end. Determine the maximum stress induced when a weight of:
(i) 3000 N falls through a height of 20 cm on the collar,
(ii) 30 kN falls through a height of 2 cm on the collar. Take E = 2.0 × 105 N/mm2

(4) The 1000-kg uniform bar AB is suspended from two cables AC and BD; each with cross-sectional area 400
mm2. Find the magnitude P and location x of the largest additional vertical force that can be applied to the bar.
The stresses in AC and BD are limited to 100 MPa and 50 MPa, respectively.

(5) The concrete post below is reinforced axially with four symmetrically placed steel bars, each of cross-
sectional area 900 mm2. Compute the stress in each material when the 1000-kN axial load is applied. The
moduli of elasticity are 200 GPa for steel and 14 GPa for concrete.

(6) A vertical compound tie member fixed rigidly at its upper end, consists of a steel rod 2.5 m long and 200 mm
in diameter, placed within an equally long brass tube 21 mm in internal diameter and 30 mm external
diameter. The rod and the tube are fixed together at the ends. The compound member is then suddenly loaded
in tension by a weight of 10 kN falling through a height of 3 mm on to a flange fixed to its lower end.
Calculate the maximum stresses in steel and brass. Assume Es = 2 × 105 N/mm2 and Eb = 1.0 × 105 N/mm2
