HISTORICAL

ANTECEDENTS IN

MODERN PERIOD
Presented by Joana Mae Cabanit
Historical Antecedent
The history, events, characteristics of one's earlier
life
An antecedent is described as a precursor to
the unfolding of something, or life.

Modern Period (19th Century -

21st Century)
This period marked with a steady increase in population that emphasizes the
“importance of increasing the efficiency of transportation, communication, and
production.”
More complicated problems appeared that needed more solutions and greater risks
for many aspects of human life were to be addressed.

ANTECEDENTS IN

MODERN PERIOD
COMMUNICATION
Camera

It is a time machine that helped people

capture any moments in history and the
present.

Alexander Walcott

He invented the first camera in 1840.

He made the first camera that

produced photos that did not fade
quickly.
Camera

Joseph Niepce

The photographed pictures taken by him

were seen around 1826.
It was taken using a camera he made on
his own, on a paper coated with silver
chloride.

Telephone

One of the most significant development at that time.

the more people got acquainted through trade and discovery , the more
they wanted a way to communicate with each other in real time.
Alexander Graham Bell

The modernization of modern-

day communication started with
his invention.
On March 7, 1876, he
successfully received a patent
and secured the rights to the
discovery.

Smartphone

The first version of what we consider a smartphone

was invented in 1992 by IBM Simon Personal
Communicator.
It was made available for purchase in 1994.
Radio

The radio is regarded as one of the remarkable inventions. It made one-

way communication easier and spread wide over to the world in no
time.

Nikola Tesla

It is proven that the first wireless

radio was invented by him.

On March 1, 1893, first publicly

demonstrated radio by transmitting
electromagnetic energy without wires.
Guglielmo Marconi

In 1895, he built the equipment and

transmitted electrical signals through
the air from one end of his house to the
other.
He was issued the first patent for a
wireless radio in England in 1896.
However, Tesla’s patents were not
granted in the US until 1900.
Electronic Television

It utilized the concept of radio and gave a visual outlook.

Television can be a great source of amusement and knowledge as well as
a great way of communication in a real-time visualized way.

Philo Taylor Farnsworth II

It was first successfully

demonstrated in San Francisco
on Sept. 7, 1927.
An inventor who had lived in a
house without electricity until he
was 14.
PRODUCTION
Jacquard Loom

It was used to simplify textile manufacturing

(which, prior to invention, required the use of
drawloom which needed two people, a weaver and
and a drawboy).

Joseph Marie Jacquard

First demonstrated in 1801, simplified the way

in which complex textiles such as damask
were woven.
He got his patent in 1804.
Petroleum Refinery

By refining petroleum, invented kerosene, which

was used at first to provide lighting at homes and
then was used for heating homes.

Samuel Kier

In 1850, Kier started experimenting with distillation

and became the first person in the U.S. to attempt to
use liquid petroleum as a starting material to produce
lamp oil. The first person to refine crude oil.
His refining experiments were successful and by 1851.
He established America’s first oil refinery in 1853.
Pasteurization

It is the process of heating dairy products to kill

harmful bacteria that causes fast spoilage.

Louis Pasteur

In 1862, he tried the process after experimenting

with heated wine.
Pasteur completed the first successful test on
April 20, 1862, eventually patenting the method
Light Bulb

This profoundly changed human life by illuminating

the night. The first electric bulb allowed all human
lives to be hospitable to many modern-day activities.

Thomas Edison

He improvised the concept of Joseph Swan and

Charles Brush, experimenting with different
filaments that could last longer.
Started with a 40-hour life light bulb and finally
made a bulb lasting 1500 hours.
In 1879, he made an incandescent bulb that burned
long enough to be practical.
Pencillium

It is one of the most famous accidental inventions

of all time. It was widely used and advertised in World
War II as it helped service members eliminate different
venereal diseases.
Alexander Fleming

Fleming forgot to close the lid of his Petri dish

filled with bacteria noticed that the sample got
contaminated with a mold and all the bacteria
was dead.
In 1928, he found the fungus Penicillium, which
was purified and developed for fighting
bacterial infections in humans without harming
the host.
TRANSPORTATION
Car

Karl Benz

He didn't want to ease people into automobiles with a

familiar horse carriage. He wanted to create a self-
contained vehicle that would push the automotive industry
forward.

On January 29, 1886, he got the patent for

the three-wheeled car known as
Motorwagen.
He built his first four-wheeled car in 1891.
He started a company by 1900 and became
the world's largest manufacturer of
automobiles.
Engine-Powered Airplane

At the time, other aircrafts such as gliders—or

aircrafts without engines—did exist, but the
Wrights wanted to add more power to the
objects they were flying.

Wilbur and Orville Wright

They spent four years of research and

development to create the first successful
powered airplane, the 1903 Wright Flyer.
It first flew at Kitty Hawk, North
Carolina, on December 17, 1903, with
Orville at the controls.
