RECAP

Journalistic writing is a writing style used to report news

stories in newspapers, television broadcasts, on radio and on the
Internet. It uses factual and real information written in plain and
easy language and in short paragraphs.

LESSON

7
News is part of everybody’s life, we hear, watch and learn
them through different ways. Nowadays, news can be found in
various media like the internet or what we call the digital news, the
traditional ways are the published news in newspaper, heard
through the radio, or watched in TV sets.
An editorial news can be read in newspaper which usually
highlights some issue in the society. The writer explains,
interprets, describes a topic and criticizes it. His or her opinion
may persuade the readers to think and make a decision or an
action about the issue.

Editorial is a newspaper article that expresses one’s opinion

over a particular issue that deals with the society. The opinion in
the editorial must be backed up with facts and evidences to make
it credible. It must persuade the reader to agree on the point of
view of the writer.
The editorial has three parts: the introduction, the body, and
the conclusion.
Introduction
The introduction grabs the reader’s attention which clearly
states the topic the writer will discuss and is usually with one to
two sentences only.
Examples:
A. The Filipina beauty is a rare jewel in every beauty pageant
held all over the world.
The topic is about Filipina beauty.

8
B. The COVID-19 Pandemic brought out many different jobs
to cope with poverty. The most popular is online selling.
The topic is about online selling.
C. The warning pictures on cigarette cartoons show the end
result of a smoker. Yet, despite the dangers, cigarettes are
readily available in convenience stores.
The topic is about the dangers of cigarette smoking.
Body
The body consists of two or more paragraphs which states
the writer’s opinion on the topic. It gives examples, reasons, facts,
and details to support the writer’s opinion. It also gives a solution
to the writer’s opinion.
Examples:
A. Cigarette smoking is one of the leading causes of death,
cancer, and other disease in the Philippines.
The writer gives some reasons or facts to the topic.
B. Smokers are not the only ones risking illness and death
from cigarettes; second-hand smoke also kills and
weakens. Many experts trace high incidents of asthma and
other respiratory ailments among children to second-hand
smoker.
These sentences are reasons or facts the writer states in
his editorial.
C. Cigarettes are deadly; the risks are real; the benefits are
nonexistent. The only way to stop the danger is to stop the
sale of cigarettes altogether.
Here, the writer suggests a solution to the topic he raised.
Conclusion
The conclusion ends with an appeal to the readers and leaves
the reader thinking or persuades them to take an action.

9
Examples:
A. It is the time politicians took decisive action. It is the time for
cigarettes to be declared illegal.
The writer’s conclusion is to ask the politicians to take an
action about the banning of cigarettes.
B. The Filipinos should act on the matter now. The
environmental problem on garbage waste should be stopped.
In this part, the writer seeks the Filipino people to do their
part to stop the environmental problem.
C. The challenges faced by the education needed hands to help.
The school community should cooperate to fulfil every
planned action by the school.
The writer wants to persuade the readers to be cooperative in
the activities planned by the school.

Guided Practice

Read and identify the parts of editorial in the example below.

Chris Macas has been a waste collector since 2018. While he

is proud of his contributions to the cleanliness of his community,

The situation of Chris is not new in the Philippines. Although,
the country has several laws related to solid waste management,
strict implementation remains a problem, causing adverse impact
not just to the environment but also to waste workers’ welfare.
Recognizing these challenges and the vulnerability of
waste workers like Chris, World Vision and Eco Waste Coalition,
with funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic
Cooperation and Global Development (BMZ) are implementing the
