Guide Card

In this lesson, you will learn to apply

trigonometric functions in solving
real-life problems.

This SIM will help you further

understand the concepts related to
Trigonometric Functions.

Inday plants a new tree and attaches a

guy wire to help support the tree while
its roots take hold. An eight foot wire
is attached to the tree and to a stake
in the ground. From the stake in the
ground the angle of elevation of the
connection with the tree is 42º. Find to
the nearest tenth of a foot, the height
of the connection point on the tree.

From the top of a fire tower, a forest

ranger sees his partner on the ground
at an angle of depression of 40º. If the
tower is 45 feet in height, how far is
the partner from the base of the
tower, to the nearest tenth of a foot?

Suppose the ranger sees another fire

and the angle of depression to the fire
is 3 degrees. What is the horizontal
distance to this fire given the height of

Great work! You’ve managed to

finish the activity card.
Now let’s have few more exercises.
Assessment 1

SOLVE THE FOLLOWING REAL-LIFE PROBLEMS BY

APPLYING TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTIONS.

From the top of a building that is 200 feet

tall, Bailey sees a car coming towards the
building. (Somehow, she knows that) the
angle of depression when she first saw the
car was 20° and when she stopped looking at
it was 40° degrees. How far did the car
travel?
Assessment 1

SOLVE THE FOLLOWING REAL-LIFE PROBLEMS BY

APPLYING TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTIONS.

A historic lighthouse is 200 yards from a bike

path along the edge of a lake. A walkway to
the lighthouse is 400 yards long. Find the
acute angle between the bike path and
walkway, as illustrated in the figure.
Assessment 1

SOLVE THE FOLLOWING REAL-LIFE PROBLEMS BY

APPLYING TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTIONS.

Bennyboy is on his way home. While he is near his

house, he saw his pet Siopao stuck at the roof. "Oh no!
What do I do?!", he said. He tried to look for a way to
save his pet. While searching, he saw a 10-foot ladder
resting below their window. Then he thinks, if he will
place the ladder 5 feet away from their house, at what
angle should the ladder make to reach the roof?
Assessment 2

SOLVE THE FOLLOWING REAL-LIFE PROBLEMS BY

APPLYING TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTIONS.

A radio station tower was built in two sections. From a

point 87 feet from the base of the tower, the angle of
elevation of the top of the first section is 25º, and the
angle of elevation of the top of the second section is
40º. To the nearest foot, what is the height of the top
section of the tower?
Assessment 2

SOLVE THE FOLLOWING REAL-LIFE PROBLEMS BY

APPLYING TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTIONS.

The sledding run is 300 yards long with a

vertical drop of 27.6 yards. Find the angle of
depression of the run.
Assessment 2

SOLVE THE FOLLOWING REAL-LIFE PROBLEMS BY

APPLYING TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTIONS.

Find the angle of elevation of the sun when a

12.5 meter tall telephone pole casts an 18-
meter long shadow.

ANGLE OF ELEVATION

The angle of elevation of an object as

seen by an observer is the angle between
the horizontal and the line from the
object to the observer's eye (the line of
sight).

ANGLE OF DEPRESSION

If the object is below the level of the

observer, then the angle between the
horizontal and the observer's line of sight
is called the angle of depression.

A ladder leans against a brick wall. The foot of the ladder is

6 feet from the wall. The ladder reaches a height of 15 feet
on the wall. Find to the nearest degree, the angle the
ladder makes with the wall.
In this problem place xº where the ladder meets the wall.
Do not assume that the angle will always be at the ground
level. It is assumed that the wall is vertical, perpendicular
with the ground. The foot of the ladder is the bottom of the
ladder, where it hits the ground.

This solution deals with "opposite" and "adjacent" making

it a tangent problem.

Therefore, the angle that the ladder

makes with the wall is approximately
22 degrees.
