TUTORIAL ASSIGNMENT NO. – 3, DATE: 24th Jan 2024, MAX. MARKS: 10
Instructions: (a) Only two students on each bench Use one of the two student’s ID number for data and
mention it. (b) Must bring pocket calculator but no mobile phones in tutorial hours (keep them in your bag
switched off). (c) Instructor may be asked for clarification of doubts. Discuss with your bench-mate only. (d)
You must submit your solution on this sheet only. Solve the assignment in your notebook, then transfer the
solution neatly to this assignment sheet and submit it. No extra sheets will be given.
TUTORIAL PROBLEM
T1. Find at u=0.65 the point, tangent vector and slope of a parametric general ellipse with α=40° when
the major and minor axes are 180 mm and 90 mm respectively, by (i) using the parametric equation of
the general ellipse, and (ii) using the parametric equation of the basic ellipse followed by mapping from
WCS to MCS. (iii) At what value of the parameter does the slope become unbounded?
Solution:
(i) P(u) = [xc+Acos(2*pi*u)cos(α)-B sin(2*pi*u)sin(α), yc+Acos(2*pi*u)sin(α)+Bsin(2*pi*u)cos(α), zc],
0≤u≤1
=[0+90*cos(2*pi*0.65)*cosd(40)-45*sin(2*pi*0.65)*sind(40),
0+90*cos(2*pi*0.65)*sind(40)+45*sin(2*pi*0.65)*cosd(40), 0]
=[-17.1,-61.9, 0]
Differentiating with respect to “u” the parametric equation for general ellipse:
P’(u)=[-Asin(u)cos(α)-Bcos(u)sin(α), -A sin(u)sin(α)+Bcos(u)cos(α), 0]
=[-2*pi*90*sin(2*pi*0.65)*cosd(40)- 2*pi*45*cos(2*pi*0.65)*sind(40), -2*pi*90*
sin(2*pi*0.65)*sind(40)+ 2*pi*45*cos(2*pi*0.65)*cosd(40), 0] = [457.3, 166.8, 0].
(ii) Basic ellipse with respect to the WCS:
P(u) = [Acos(2*pi*u), B sin(2*pi*u), 0], 0≤u≤1
P(u=0.65) = [90*cos(2*pi*0.65), 45*sin(2*pi*0.65), 0] = [-52.9, -36.4, 0]
P’(u) = [-2*pi*A*sin(2*pi*u), 2*pi*B*cos(2*pi*u), 0], 0≤u≤1
P’(u=0.65) = [-2*pi*90*sin(2*pi*0.65), 2*pi*45*cos(2*pi*0.65), 0]= [457.5, -166.2, 0]
[P(u)]mcs=[T]*[P(u)]wcs
=[cosd(40),cosd(130),cosd(90),0; cosd(50), cosd(40), cosd(90),0; cosd(90), cosd(90), cosd(0),0;0,0,0,1]
*[-52.9; -36.4; 0;1]
= [-17.1; -61.9; 0; 1]. Which is same as the result with general ellipse equation.
[P’(u)]mcs=[T]*[P’(u)]wcs
=[cosd(40),cosd(130),cosd(90),0; cosd(50), cosd(40), cosd(90),0; cosd(90), cosd(90), cosd(0),0;0,0,0,1]
*[457.5; -166.2; 0;1]
=[457.3; 166.8; 0; 1]. Which is the same as the result with the general ellipse equation.
(iii) -90*sin(u)*cosd(40)-45*cos(u)*sind(40) = 0
tan(u)=-(45/90)*tand(40); u = atand(-(45/90)*tand(40)) = -22.8.
That means the slope becomes unbounded at 360-22.8 =337.2. Also at 180-22.8 = 157.2.

ASSIGNMENT PROBLEM
A1. Find at u=u1 the point, tangent vector, X-Y plane slope, and unit normal vector of a parametric
general ellipse inclined at α to the MCS X-axis. The half-major and half-minor axes are A mm and B
mm, respectively. Use (i) the parametric equation of the general ellipse. Find also the value of the
parameter at which the slope become unbounded.
The value of u1 is equal to sum of the last two digits in your ID number divided by 100, subjected to a
minimum of 0.2. If it is less than 0.2, then add 0.2.
The values of the α in degrees is equal to 10 plus the number formed by the first two digits in the last
four digits of your ID number.
The value of A is equal to 10 multiplied by the sum of the last four digits of your ID number, subjected
to a minimum of 20. If it is less than 20 then add 20.
The value of B is equal to 10 multiplied by the sum of the last two digits of your ID number, subjected
to a minimum of 10. If it is less than 10 then add 10.
