TUTORIAL ASSIGNMENT NO. – 10, DATE: DATE: 20th March 2024, MAX. MARKS: 10

TUTORIAL PROBLEM

T1. Find the nodal displacements and elemental stresses for the planar truss shown below using finite
element method. E1=206 GPa and has a cross-sectional area of A1=0.001 m2. The bar-2 is made of
Aluminium with E2=69 GPa and has a cross-sectional area of A2=0.0026 m2.

Solution: E1=206 GPa and has a cross-sectional area of A1=0.001 m2. The bar-2 is made of
Aluminium with E2=69 GPa and has a cross-sectional area of A2=0.0026 m2.

Elemental stiffness matrices:

A1= 0.001 m2; E1= 206 GPa; L1 = sqrt(0.24^2+0.24^2) = 0.3394 m.
Direction cosines: l1= cos(45) = sin(45) = 0.7071=m1
A2= 0.0026 m2; E2= 69 GPa; L2 = sqrt(0.12^2+0.24^2) = 0.3394 m.
Direction cosines: l1= cos(45) = sin(45) = 0.7071=m1

We will use the units of kN for force, mm for length, and kN/mm^2.

ASSIGNMENT PROBLEM

The two-element planar truss shown is subjected to external loading as shown. Using FEM with the
same node and element numbering as given, determine the displacement components of node 3, the
reaction force components at nodes 1 and 2, and the elemental stresses. The elements have modulus
of elasticity E1 = 70 GPa, E2 = 120 GPa and cross-sectional areas A1 = 1000 mm2, and A2 = 500 mm2.
The F3x is equal to the sum of the last four digits in your ID number in kN subject to a minimum of
20 kN. The F3y = 2F3x.
