Following safety rules and precautions should not be difficult. These rules are designed to keep everyone safe and
protect you from harm. Choosing to bypass or ignore a rule that is intended for your safety is a risky thing to do and is
not permitted at site.
Reasons why we rationalize unsafe choices
Some people believe they can do a task faster or more efficiently if they break the rules. Reasons employees try to
rationalize their unsafe choices, include:
Mood.
Lack of or inadequate supervision.
Lack of consequence if they break the rules.
Time pressures to get the job done quickly.
Poor leadership where others witness senior
personnel behaving unsafely.
Energy level and decreased focus.

What can happen when unsafe choices are made?

Unsafe choices often lead to injuries, increased costs and even fatalities on the jobsite.
Example of rationalizing unsafe choices
“I forgot my fall protection, but it will only take a minute to go up and right back down so I’m sure I’ll be fine”.
“It Is The Normal Thing To Do” or “Everyone Else Does It”
When there are other people around who are not making the right choices when it comes to safety, it becomes the
“normal” thing to do despite not being the correct. Just because “everyone else does it”, doesn’t mean you have to make
the same unsafe choices.
