RIZAL’S LIFE AND WORKS

Read the assigned readings for this homework.

Compose a five-sentence essay answering the following questions:

1. Why did Rizal and del Pilar fight during their stay in Europe?
2. How did Rizal honor the GomBurZa in El Filibusterismo?

ANSWER

1. Rizal and del Pilar fight in the Europe because they have different views on the direction of the
Filipino reform movement. While Rizal advocated for gradual reform through education and
peaceful means, del Pilar, influenced by a more radical perspective, leaned towards a more
aggressive approach, pushing for immediate social and political change. This ideological
divergence created tension between the two leaders, leading to a rift in their collaboration for
the common cause of Filipino liberation.

2. In El Filibusterismo, Rizal paid tribute to the GomBurZa, the three Filipino priests executed by the
Spanish authorities in 1872. He depicted a scene where the character Father Florentino recalls
the tragic fate of the priests and their contributions to the Philippines. This served as a touching
reminder of the sacrifices made by those who fought for justice and inspired a sense of national
consciousness among the readers. Rizal strategically embedded historical narratives in his
literary work to amplify the message of the need for social reform and to keep alive the memory
of those who stood against oppression.
