PHYSICAL SCIENCE
Performance Task
Chemistry of Household Cleaning Products

Introduction:
Many people do not know that household chemicals can be quite
toxic. Most of the dangerous substances in the home are found in
cleaners, solvents, pesticides, and products used for automotive
care.

A toxic substance is any chemical that is capable of harming

a person if ingested, inhaled, or absorbed by the skin. Toxic
substances vary widely in the types of harm they cause, the
conditions under which they become harmful, and the amount it
takes to cause harm. Toxic substances can cause both acute and
chronic reactions, they are a broader category than poisons,
which produce acute reaction only. For this reason, the words
"toxic" and "poisonous" are not interchangeable.

This PETA is a two-part activity where you will a) conduct a

household’s common chemicals and cleaning supplies survey. b)
create your own household cleaning product

Instructions:

PART I A

Think again - your all-purpose cleaning cocktail could turn a

bad day even worse. Can death by toilet bowl cleaning really
happen?

1. Go to this link and watch this video https://youtu.be/FH1h0oWjark

to understand the reactions involved when combining common

cleaning products found at home.

2. Answer the following questions:

University of Santo Tomas, Senior High School Page 1 of 10

Physical Science 1st Term; AY 2020-2021

a) What should one do to ensure safety when using household

cleaners?
b) What is the most common and sometimes fatal mistake of
people when using cleaners?
c) What is the active ingredient in a typical household
bleach?
d) What chemical when mixed with bleach can create harmful
fumes that can irritate the lungs?
e) What are two dangerous products created when bleach is
mixed with rubbing alcohol?
f) Which active ingredient is found at high concentrations in
some oxidizing drain cleaners?
g) What gas is produced when you mix an acid like hydrochloric
acid down a drain that already has high concentrations of
drain cleaner with sodium hypochlorite?
h) Is it true that an acid and base declogger can help
neutralize each other?
3. Conduct a survey of your household’s common chemicals and

cleaning supplies. Make sure you have an adult to help you!

4. Assemble a number of household products including hazardous

household products, e.g., kitchen products (cleansers, drain
cleaners), bathroom items (toothpaste, toilet bowl cleaner),
household cleaners (detergents), lawn and garden supplies
(fertilizers, pesticides), automotive and paint supplies, etc.

5. Have a variety of products with the signal words: danger,

danger- poison, warning, and caution. Also include some non-
hazardous products, e.g., shampoo, toothpaste, and other non-
toxic substances, i.e., products that do not have any signal
words.

6. Fill in the table using the survey sheet, be sure to look in

various rooms around your home. Include under the kitchen and
bathroom sinks, in the laundry room, and parking area/garage if
applicable.

7. Note: You will only be inspecting the outside of each chemical

container.

8. Have an adult assist you and make sure to follow safety

precautions when handling containers, you are not familiar with.

9. Share your data sheet with your groupmates and make a summary
of your output. You can use graphs or photos to best describe
your data.

10. Use the discussion questions below to describe and decide how
you can best present your data.

Discussion Questions:
a) How many chemicals did you find at home?
b) In what rooms did you find these chemicals?
c) Did any of the chemicals you found have warning labels?
Which ones?
d) What factors are important to your family when buying these
types of items?

11. Use the guide questions to formulate a statement regarding

household chemicals and its effect on health and the environment.
a) How can you prevent being exposed to toxic or harmful
chemicals?
b) Using chemicals safely is part of preventing pollution and
reducing health effects from exposure. What are other ways you can
prevent pollution at home?

PART 2
DIY HOUSEHOLD CLEANING PRODUCT

So far you have learned that most of our commercial cleaners in the

market have active ingredients that are toxic to humans and animals, and

are packaged using plastics that can readily pollute our environment. A

better alternative is to make your own cleaning product at home using

simple ingredients that will not harm you or your pet, and help the

environment at the same time.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Physical Science 1st Term; AY 2020-2021

1. Watch a short video of 20 DIY natural cleaning recipes that actually

work! VIDEO LINK: https://youtu.be/7PJfpprBJy0

2. Choose three recipes, follow the directions, and create your own

cleaning product.

3. Try out your creation and then submit a video of the product in

action.

4. The video should only be 2-5-minute long.

5. Upload your videos in your team drives and share the link.

Goodluck!
