CONCRETE REINFORCEMENT
FIBERGLASS REBAR
WHAT IS IT?

Fiberglass rebar is a composite

material made of two non-metallic
components and is used for concrete
reinforcing.

• Fiber - Structural Element

• E-CR Glass

• Matrix - Binder
• Vinyl Ester
• Epoxy
• Polyester/ Polyolefin (NOT
ASTM Compliant!)

WHY PINKBAR® IS A BETTER PRODUCT?

• Owens Corning ADVANTEXTM Glass Fiber

Roving guarantees high mechanical
performances 9

• Grooving enhances bond to concrete vs.

competitive product

• Vinylester thermoset resin protects and

guarantees durability of mechanical properties
over time

• Lacquering makes PINKBAR® unique, easy to

RUST-PROOF, STRONGER, LIGHTER, CODE
APPROVED…AND MORE
RUSTPROOF
PINKBAR® will never rust, enabling more durable
structures.

PINKBAR® will allow development of new concrete

mixes looking for more sustainable and less CO2
impacting mixes.
It will also allow reducing concrete covers
contributing to less CO2, less labor and less costs.

NO RUST MEANS
MORE FRESH
DRINKING WATER
MORE OPTIONS FOR CONCRETE
STRONGER LASTS LONGER STRONGER
STRONGER IS SUSTAINABLE 2,5x stronger in tensile
strength compared to
the same size diameter
LIGHTER THAN STEEL
4x lighter compared to the same size diameter.
It allows transporting larger amount of material in a container or
truck and using less heavier equipment for loading an unloading

LIGHTER REDUCES TRUCKS

LESS IMPACT, LESS CO2, MORE ROUTES
ELECTROMAGNETIC TRANSPARENT
Non-conductive and electromagnetic neutral for
modern equipment like MRI, Data centers where either
magnetic fields or high voltage can be involved such as
railways.

ELECTROMAGNETIC TRANSPARENT
TRANSPARENT LIKE IT’S NOT THERE…YET
EFFICIENT AND COST EFFECTIVE
Low-Thermal Conductivity and No-thermal cycling impact
Maintains excellent thermal insulation and creates no thermal
bridges. It is ideal as reinforcement of insulation precast panels
and in all applications where insulation is crucial for the project.

MORE SUSTAINABLE
SUSTAINABILITY BY LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT
PINKBAR+ VS STEEL
Raw Material
• Consumes 70% the embodied energy of steel
• GFRP Tg (120oC) < Iron melting point (1500oC)

Manufacturing
• Less heat and electrical energy consumed
• Lower CO22 emissions
• No water/gas consumption

Distribution
• 70% less transportation fuel/gas (Light weight)
• Lowers truck tailpipe/lifting crane CO22 emissions

Use
• Longer design life • Lower project schedule
• No maintenance • Seawater (saves freshwater)
• Less cement content • Less energy consumption

Recycle
• At end of life, it can be crushed & used as coarse aggregate
in concrete
PINKBAR® LOVES CONCRETE CARBONATATION
CONCRETE RECAPTURE A PORTION OF CO2 EMITTED IN PRODUCTION DURING SERVICE LIFE
Raw materials in the oven Oven’s temperature

It is estimated that 23% of CO2 emissions produced during calcination will be re-absorbed by
concrete during its service life (20%) and the following end-of-life (3%)

RUSTPROOF PINKBAR loves CO2 into concrete

PINKBAR® will never rust, enabling more durable structures.

HANDLING & INSTALLING
HANDLING CUTTING TYING

• Easy and safer handling and placement • Can be easily cut using a fine toothed • Plastic clips, zip ties, PVC coated wire,
with fewer workers and faster work saw in field, or a diamond tipped epoxy coated wire, standard steel wire
blade in a chop saw used in factory
• PINKBAR® won’t get hot in direct • Tie guns
sunlight, or cold in winter like steel does • Softer material results in easier,
faster, and safer cutting • Recommended that chairs be placed
• Due to its increased flexibility,
PINKBAR® can easily be field-formed more frequently for stability.
• No metal means less sparking and
into large radius curves
heat generation during cutting

DO NOT:
• Shear
• Bend or break
• Torch

ACI 440.5-08 construction with FRP rebar

Safety: PINK color (PINKBAR®+) enables better product visibility on-site. OSHA recommends to wear gloves and any other
standard project/site specific safety gear that is required.
Storage: PINKBAR® is durable in the outdoor environment. Discoloration, fading or chalking of the surface can occurs due to
oxidation or UV exposure, though these effects won’t impact the product performance. If extended outdoor exposure is
possible, it’s recommended that the bars should remain in their packaging or be tarped

SIZES AND AVAILABILITY
Straight Bars:
• Same bar diameters as steel: 8,10,12,16,19,22,25,32 mm
• Stock lengths usually 6, 12m
• Pultrusion process allows virtually any reasonable bar
diameter and infinite length. (Only limitations will be
handling and transportation)
• Sold on a linear meter basis versus a price SEE BENT BAR
per unit weight DETAILING GUIDE
Prefabricated Bent Bars:
• Bent bars are manufactured in-factory in bar diameters
from 8 to 25mm
• Some standard bent shapes are made-to-stock,
other shapes are made-to-order available
• Most steel bent shapes are possible in PINKBAR® rebar
except certain shapes like “Z”
• Bars cannot be bent on site. Proper shapes and
quantities ordered by contractor.

HOW TO DESIGN WITH PINKBAR+®
NOW A GUIDE THEN A SOFTWARE WILL GUIDE YOU THROUGH THE DESIGN PROCESS

• Fiberglass Rebar is Linear Elastic

• Continues to add stress at a linear rate to failure
• No Yield Point, not ductile

• End State Failure Mode:

• Steel – Yielding of Reinforcement
• Fiberglass Rebar – Concrete Crushing

• Warning signs present: Large deformability

(significant deflection or crack widths) are visible
indicators of pending failure.

• Due to low Modulus of Elasticity, serviceability issues such

as deflections and crack widths typically governs the
Fiberglass Rebar layout
HOW TO DESIGN WITH PINKBAR+®
BASIC PRINCIPLES

• Desired failure mode:

• Concrete crushing prior to FRP reaching ultimate limit
strain – over reinforced concrete section.

• Design Assumptions Service Limit State

• Stress limitation
• Deflection control
• Cracking control
HOW TO DESIGN WITH PINKBAR+®
BASIC PRINCIPLES
Property PinkBar Steel

Tensile Strength Upwards of 1000Mpa Standard 450Mpa (Grade b450c)

Modulus of Elasticity >=50Gpa (EAD) 200Gpa

Transverse Shear Upwards of 180Mpa Approximately 248Mpa (60% Fy)

Weight 0.414kg/m for #5-16mm PINKBAR 1,6kg/m for #5-16mm Steel rebar

• Less clear cover needed

• Potential for more efficient designs or use of less concrete
• However, higher radial CTE for Fiberglass Rebar dictates a minimum of 2 bar
diameters of clear cover

• No issues with “Dissimilar Metals”

• Fiberglass Rebar is compatible with steel for lap lengths
• Allows for mixing of materials and hybrid designs

• Lap Splicing and Development Lengths similar (dependent upon design

capacity)
• Fiberglass Rebar performs well in fatigue but is susceptible to creep in regions
with large sustained loads.
