ANGLE

MEASUREMENT
Angle Measurement
What is an Angle?
an angle is a measure of rotation between two rays or line
segments that share a common endpoint, called the vertex.
Angle Measurement
Angles in Standard Position

The angle is in standard position if its is drawn in the cartesian plane with its
vertex at the origin and its initial side on the positive x - axis.
Example: Find the measure of each angle
SPECIAL ANGLES IN THE UNIT CIRCLE
Angle Measurement

Degree (°)

The degree is a unit of angular measurement denoted by the symbol (°)

One degree is 1/360th of the angle formed by a complete rotation
around a point. Therefore, a full circle measures 360 degrees.

Degrees can be further divided into minutes and seconds. Each degree is
divided into 60 minutes, and each minute is divided into 60 seconds.

1° = 60 minutes
1' = 60 seconds
Angle Measurement
Radian

- The radian is another unit of angular measurement.

- One radian is defined as the angle subtended when you traverse an
arc in a circle that is equal in length to the radius of the circle.
- The symbol for radian is "rad."
1 circle = 2π radians
To convert from degrees to radians, multiply the degree measure by
π/180
Conversely, to convert from radians to degrees, multiply the radian
measure by 180/π
Angle Measurement
Example:

An angle of 60 degrees is equivalent to π/3 radians because 60 × π/180 =

π/3.
Example: 210 degrees
210° is equivalent to 7π/6radians.
Conversion: 210 × π/180 = 7π/6

Example: 360 degrees

360° is equivalent to 2π radians.
Conversion: 360 × π/180 =2π.
Angle Measurement
Example:
Radian Measure to Degrees

1. 65π /36 · 180/π 3. -4π/3 · 180/π

= 65π/1 · 5/π = -4π/1 · 60/π
= 325° = 240°

2. π/3 · 180/π
= π/1 · 60/π
= 60°
Coterminal Angle
are angles which are both in standard position and have the same terminal slide.

Example:
Find the smallest angles (one in a clockwise direction and the other in
counterclockwise direction.

1. 42°
42° + 360° = 402°
42° - 360° = -318°
Example:
Find the smallest angles (one in a clockwise direction and the other in
counterclockwise direction.

2. -213°
-213° + 360° = 147°
-213° - 360° = -573°

3. 5π/6
5π/6 + 2π = 5π + 12π / 6 = 17π /6

5π/6 - 2π = 5π - 12π / 6 = 7π/6

Example:
Find the Coterminal Angle between 0° and 360°

1. -330° 4. -442°
--330° + 360 = 30°
-442° + 360° = -82° + 360° = 278°

2. -435°
-435° + 360 = -75° + 360° = 285°

3. 640°

640° - 360° = 280°
