The elements of design are the
visual objects that are placed in
artworks. These elements are
crucial in depicting the visual
message.
• The most basic element of
design.
• Composed of a series of
points.
• Can be defined as the
connection between two
pints.
• Lines are used to separate
elements or to direct
viewers to a specific area in
the graphics.
• Composed of connected
lines forming a boundary.
• Two types of shapes –
geometric and organic.
1. Geometric shapes are
precise and have
measurements.
2. Organic shapes are more
natural and smooth.
• One of the most obvious
elements in design.
• Color is a standalone
element; it can be used as a
background or applied to
other elements, such as
lines and shapes.
• Color can also be used to
create a particular mood in
design.
• Add a tactile effect to your
design using texture.
• Used to put a surface feel to
your design.
• In graphic design, it create a
three-dimensional effect on
the screen.
• Also known as negative or
white space.
• These are the areas on the
design that are left blank.
• It connotes something that
is three-dimensional and
encloses volume, which
includes height, weight, and
width.
• Refers to the light or dark
something on a scale of
white to black (with white
being the highest value and
black being the lowest
value).
• Considered to be one of the
most important elements of
art.
These are the concepts on how
you can organize various design
elements in visual content.
• It pertains to visual
equilibrium – the
distribution of design
elements in content to
create visual stability.
• There are three types of
• This is a type of balance in
which design elements with
the same weight are equally
distributed on both sides.
• Design elements with
varying visual weights are
strategically placed in the
artwork to create a visual
balance.
• The design elements are
equally placed around the
central point.
• This is a part of the visual
content where you want to
draw the viewer’s attention
by making it stand out
among other design
elements.
• This is when you want to
make the viewer’s eye follow
a certain direction in your
visual content.
• Create a particular
movement in your artwork
through lines, edges, shapes,
or colors.
• This refers to repeating
certain objects throughout
the visual content.
• This is a way to create
relationship and unity
among different objects in
your visual content through
repeating colors, font faces,
and shapes.
• It is also used to reinforce a
certain idea.
• This tells whether which
element in visual content is
more important.
• This is how well the design
elements in a visual content
work together to convey a
clear and unified message to
the viewers.
• This refers to the striking
difference between two
elements (e.g., rough texture
next to smooth; white and
black colors)
• This is achieved when all the
elements are arranged to
make the viewer think that
they form a coherent whole.
• This uses the different
elements in an image to
create visual interest.
The following are the principles and techniques that you can keep in mind when creating and editing your project:

Back up a copy of your original project so that you can go back and work on it again if
you do not want your edit.

Using the crop feature of your editing tool remove the part of the image that does not
help in conveying your intended message.

Remember to keep the right dimensions when resizing an image. Make sure that the
image is not warped and stretched. Note also that enlarging the image more than 100%
might cause the image to pixelate.

overusing retouching makes the image unrealistic. Avoid applying too much color and
saturation; overdoing these will make the image unnatural and overly edited.

Note that you should choose the image file format that is appropriate for your purpose.
Portable Network Graphics (PNG)
● This is a lossless compression file format. It
means that the quality of the image is still
the same after the file size has been
reduced.
● It is designed specifically for uploading an
image on the internet rather than for print.
Joint Photographic Experts Group
(JPEG/JPG)
● This is the most popular image file
format.
● This is the default file format used by
digital cameras.
● It is a good choice for pictures with
complex colors and shading.
● Jpeg is a lossy compression file – the
quality is decreased after the file size is
reduced.
Portable Document Format (PDF)
● This is the format used when you do not
want your file to be modified.
● This is a widely used format for sharing and
printing.
Graphic Interchange Format (GIF)
● Capable of displaying simple animation
● Better for logos, drawings, small txt, black
and white images, or low-resolution files
