BS8300 - Amendment 1
BS 8300 (amended) states “ the opening force, when measured at the leading edge of the door,
should be no more than 30N (Newtons) from 0 to 30 degrees (open) and no more than 22.5N
from 30 to 60 degrees of the opening cycle.” This replaces the previous guidance
contained in Approved Document M, which states a door opening force of “not more than 20N”.

As resistance created by air pressure, hinges, door seals and poor workmanship all affect the
opening force of the closing device BS 8000 and Approved Document M have both endorsed
the use of guidance relating to electromagnetic and power operated door controls which
conform to BS EN 1155.

Note: BS 8300 refers to the whole door set and not the door closer on its own.

INTRODUCTION
Door Controls
Controls to suit a host of different needs and applications.

The George Boyd range of door controls are suitable for residential, commercial and institutional applications and are offered in a
variety of types and finishes to suit a host of different needs and applications. As they control both the opening and closing of
doors, there are a variety of considerations that need to be taken into account when specifying.

Power Size
Dependent upon the door-mass and size (see table A), the power size can be varied on certain models to suit the door to which
the closer is fitted. This can be achieved in 2 ways:

1. The door closer is positioned on the door by template or fixing bracket at

differing closing-power positions.

. Designed to hold open during normal use and is connected to the building fire alarm
system. On sounding the fire alarm, or in the event of power failure, the electromagnet
is deactivated and releases the door closer mechanism which, in turn, closes the door
in the normal controlled manner to maintain the fire door status
