RESPONSIBILITIES
WITH VICTORIA EKARIKA (BNSC, CRNA, RN, RM)
INTRODUCTION
PARENTS AND SAFETY
• As parents, we have a legal and
moral obligation to protect our
children from harm. This includes
physical safety, as well as emotional
and psychological safety.

PARENTAL REPONSIBILITIES TO SAFETY

•In this presentation, I will
discuss some of the key areas
where parents need to be
mindful of safety. I will also
provide some tips on how to
keep our children safe.
Key areas of safety
•There are many different
areas of safety that
parents need to be aware
of. Some of the most
important include:
•Home safety:
• This includes making sure that the
home is free of hazards, such as sharp
objects, electrical cords, and poisonous
substances. It also includes teaching
children about fire safety and how to
call 212 (EMERGENCY NUMBER)
in an emergency.
•Road safety:
• This includes teaching children about the
importance of wearing a seatbelt, crossing
the street safely, and staying away from
traffic. It also includes setting a good
example by being a safe driver yourself.
•Water safety:
•This includes teaching
children about the dangers of
drowning and how to swim
safely. It also includes
supervising children closely
when they are near water.
•Stranger danger:
•This includes teaching
children about the
importance of not talking to
strangers and how to get help
if they are approached by
someone they don't know.
•Cybersafety:
• This includes teaching children
about the dangers of
online/internet predators and
how to protect their personal
information online.
•Personal Safety
• This includes Teaching children about bodily
autonomy and personal boundaries.
• Recognizing and addressing signs of abuse or
neglect.
• Empowering children to communicate openly
about their safety concerns.
STRATEGIES FOR
IMPLEMENTING PARENTAL
RESPONSIBILITIES

What to do to keep your family safe…

• TALK TO YOUR CHILDREN
ABOUT SAFETY:
Talk to your children about the
importance of safety and the
different ways to stay safe. Be age-
appropriate in your discussions and
make sure that your children
understand the risks.
•SET A GOOD EXAMPLE:
Be a role model for your children
by demonstrating safe behaviour.
This includes wearing a
seatbelt, crossing the street
safely, not drinking and
driving and obeying traffic.
• SUPERVISE YOUR CHILDREN
CLOSELY BUT DON’T STALK
THEM:
Supervise your children closely, know who
their friends are. Have them tell you about
their friends, especially when they are young
and unsupervised. This will help to prevent
accidents and keep them safe from harm.
•BE AWARE OF YOUR
SURROUNDINGS:
Be aware of your surroundings
when you are with your children.
This will help you to identify
potential hazards and take steps to
avoid them.
• PROMOTING A POSITIVE SAFETY CULTURE IN
THE HOME
1. Setting clear rules and expectations for safety standards
2. Establishing routines and habits that prioritize safety
3. Teaching children problem-solving skills for safety scenarios
Promoting Healthy Habits
1. Proper nutrition, exercise, and sleep for overall well-being
2. Creating awareness of the importance of physical health in
reducing accidents
3. Instilling healthy coping mechanisms to manage stress and
emotions

• If you walk to school, walk with a friend or family member
• If you drive to school, always secure your vehicle
• Carry your keys in your hand when walking to your car

• Always tell your parents where you plan to be before and after school
• Make sure that your emergency contact card at school is updated
• Report all suspicious activity, whether on or off campus
• Immediately report any information about a student with weapons
• Always be aware of your surroundings
• Be familiar with the general layout of the buildings and walkways (walk around campus during the day
to familiarize yourself)
• Walk in groups and stay in well lit areas
• Carry a whistle with you (if you find yourself in danger, you can use it to draw attention and it cannot
be used to harm you)
• Avoid high risk situations and seek help from an adult if you find yourself in a situation that makes you
uncomfortable
Refuse to participate in negative or criminal behaviour
• Follow instructions of school, law enforcement officials, or other emergency response personnel
• Refrain from teasing, bullying, and harassing other students and be tolerant of their differences

keeping their children safe. By being
aware of the key areas of safety and
following these tips, we can help to
keep our children safe from harm.
• Remember: don’t just talk to them,
MODEL it for them to follow…
Because, children do most of the things they see parents do,
and not what parents tell them to do.
