Q1 (PO1, CO1, C2)

A chemical reaction is a process in which a detectable number of molecules of one or more

species have lost their identity and a new substance is formed because of a chemical change.
State the three mechanisms by which a molecule loses its identity. Describe each of the
mechanisms and provide examples.

(9 marks)

Q2 (PO2, CO2, C4)

An elementary gas phase reaction of nitrogen dioxide( NO2)producing nitrogen oxide

(NO) and oxygen(O2) was carried out in a constant volume batch reactor as shown in
equation (1)

2𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁2 → 2𝑁𝑁𝑁𝑁 + 𝑂𝑂2 (𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒 1)

Time (s) Concentration of Conversion,%

nitrogen oxide (mol/L)
0 0 0
10 0.055 29.6
20 0.093 50.4
30 0.12 65
40 0.139 75.4
50 0.153 82.6

i. Construct a stoichiometric table for this reaction in terms of concentration.

ii. Determine the rate constant, k, of the reaction.

(15 marks)

Q3 (CO2, PO2, C6)

The rate constant is k1 at a temperature of T = T1. Then, the rate constant doubles for a
10oC temperature rise at T2, and it is only valid at a particular temperature for a specific
activation energy. Derive the correlation between temperature (T) and activation energy
(E) according to this statement. Neglect any changes in concentration due to
temperature.
