Unit No. & Name: III- SPUR GEAR, HELICAL Course CO3-. At the end of this unit
GEAR AND INTRODUCTION Outcome: Students will able to understand
OF WORM AND BEVEL GEAR the design concept of different
types of gear
SUBJECTIVE QUESTIONS BL
Tooth forms, System of gear teeth, contact ratio, Standard, proportions of gear systems,
Interference in involute gears, Backlash, Selection of gear materials, Gear manufacturing
methods,
Q1) Define the term contact ratio in gear design. 1
Q2) What do you mean by interference in gear tooth design 1
Q3) When pinion and gear are made of the same material and different material, which
3
component is to be designed? Why?
Design considerations, Beam strength of gear tooth,
Q4) A pair of straight teeth spur gears, having 20° involute full depth teeth is to transmit 12
kW at 300 r.p.m. of the pinion. The speed ratio is 3 : 1. The allowable static stresses for
gear of cast iron and pinion of steel are 60 MPa and 105 MPa respectively. Assume the
following:
Number of teeth of pinion = 16; Face width = 14 times module; Velocity factor (Cv ) =
6
4.5/4.5 + v
v being the pitch line velocity in m / s; and
tooth form factor (y) = 0.154 –.912/number of teeth. Determine the module, face width
and pitch diameter of gears. Check the gears for wear; given
σes = 600 MPa; EP = 200 kN/mm2 and EG = 100 kN/mm2. Sketch the gears.
Q5) The pitch circles of a train of spur gears are shown in fig Gear A receives 3.5 kW of power 6
at 700 rpm through its shaft and rotates in the clockwise direction. Gear B is the idler gear
while the gear C is the driven gear. The number of teeth on gears A, B and C are 30, 60 and
40 respectively, while the module is 5 mm. Calculate.
(i) the torque on each gear shaft; and
(ii) the components of gear tooth forces.

Q6) It is required the design a pair of spur gear of 20° full depth involute teeth based on Lewis’s
equation. The velocity factor is to be used to account for dynamic load. The pinion shaft is
connected to a 10 KW, 1440 rpm motor. The starting torque of the motor is 150% of the
6
rated torque. The speed reduction is 4:1. The pinion as well as gear is made of plain Caron
steel, (Sut= 600 N/mm2), the fos =1.5. Design the gears specify their dimension suggest
suitable hardness for the gear.

SUPPLEMENTARY QUESTIONS BL
Introduction, Classification and Applications of Bevel &Worm Gears
Q1) Design 20° involute worm and gear to transmit 10 kW with worm rotating at
1400 r.p.m. and to obtain a speed reduction of 12 : 1. The distance between the shafts is 6
225 mm.
Design considerations, Beam strength of gear tooth,
Q2) The pitch circle diameters of the pinion and gear are 100 and 300 mm respectively. The 6

pinion is made of plain carbon steel 4OC8 (Sut = 600 N/mm2) while the gear is
made of grey cast iron FG 300 (Sut = 300N/mm2). The pinion receives 5 kW power at
500 rpm through its shaft. The service factor and factor of safety can be taken as 1.5 each.
The face width of the gear can be taken as ten times that of the module. Assume that
the velocity factor accounts for the dynamic load. Calculate
(i) module; and (ii) the number of teeth on
the pinion and gear.
