MAT Chapter 5 Bittu Mishra

Class 10 Blood Relations 9593751369

Introduction
 Any relation in the world which is either by birth or by marriage is called Blood Relations.
 This topic tests the analytical skills of the students and how can one approach the solution of
logical problems with the help of diagrams instead of calculations.
 The diagrams play an important role here. The right diagrams come from the right analysis.

Example: Any relation by birth will be mother, father, son, daughter etc. and any relation by marriage will
be father-in-law, mother-in-law, etc.

 Family Tree
To solve the problems in blood relation, one should know how to draw a family tree.
Here’s a schematic representation of a family tree:

 Points To Remember :

Some of the notations of the Diagrammatic representation of family relations:

 Relations from one generation to next:

 Topic 1: Decoding the jumbled descriptions

This section provides a description of the relationship between two members of the family in a jumbled
manner.

Question 1: Pointing to a photograph of a boy Mr.Ram said, “He is the son of the only son of my mother.”
How is Mr. Ram related to that boy?
(A) Brother (B) Uncle (C) Cousin (D) Father

Solution:
Step 1: There is a photograph and Mr. Ram. The photograph is of a man and hence two squares are
represented. But the relationship of Mr. Ram with the person in the photograph is not known yet.
Step 2: The second line says Mr. Ram has a mother. Mr Mr. Ram is the only son of his mother and Ram has
a son and that photograph belongs to MrMr. Ram’s son. Hence, option D is the correct answer.

Question 2: Rita told Mani, “The girl I met yesterday at the beach was the youngest daughter of the
brother-in-law of my friend’s mother.” How is the girl related to Rita’s friend?
(A) Cousin (B) Daughter (C) Friend (D) Aunt

Solution:
Step 1: There are two girls in the scenario Rita, and a girl. The gender of the Mani is not known yet (as of
now it’s taken as male).

Step 2: The end of the next statement reveals there is also another person in the scenarios i.e. Rita’s
friend. Since the statement says “daughter” Rita’s friend is represented with the help of circle.

Step 3: Rita’s friend has a mother who’s brother

brother-in-law
aw is the father of the girl whom she met at the beach
yesterday. Hence from the family tree, it is clear that the girl at the beach is a cousin to Rita’s friend. One
need not find out the gender of Mani as it is not necessary to solve this question.
Hence,, option A is the correct answer.

 Topic 2: Relational Puzzle
Question 1: Ravi is a son of Aman’s father’s sister. Sahil is the son of Divya who is the mother of Gaurav
and grandmother of Aman. Ashok is the father of Tanya and grandfather of Ravi. Divya is the wife of
Ashok. How is Ravi related to Divya?
(A) Nephew (B) Son (C) Grandson (D) Data inadequate
Solution: There is no requirement for drawing a family tree to solve this question. Since Divya is the
grandmother of Aman and Aman and Ravi are cousins (from the first statement). Ravi should be a
grandson to Divya. Hence, option C is the correct answer.

Question 2: How is Gaurav’s wife related to Tanya?

(A) Niece (B) Sister (C) Sister-in-law (D) Mother
Solution: Since Divya is the wife of Ashok and Ashok is the father of Tanya. We already know the Divya
is also the mother of Gaurav and Sahil, Gaurav and Tanya should be siblings. Hence Gaurav’s wife will
be Sister in law to Tanya.

 Topic 3: Coded Relations

In this section, the relationships among the members of the family are represented by certain specific
codes or symbols such as +._ $,*,&,#,@,! etc. The answers are obtained by decoded the relationships
hidden in the symbols.

Question 1: A + B indicates A is the brother of B; A – B indicates A is the sister of B ; A x B indicates A is

the father of B.
Which of the following means that C is the son of M?
(A) M – N x C + F (B) F – C + N x M (C) N + M – F x C (D) M x N – C + F
Solution: Option A: According to this option N×C indicates N is the father of c. Hence it is wrong.
Option B: According to this option C is the brother of N who is the father of M. Hence it is wrong.
Option C: According to this option F×C indicates F is the father of C. Hence it is wrong.
Option D: According to this option M is the father of N who is the sister of C hence C and N are siblings
and C is the brother of F so, C is male, Hence C is the son of M.

Question 2: P $ Q means P is the brother of Q; P # Q means P is the mother of Q; P * Q means P is the

daughter of Q. If the code of family is A # B $ C * D, who is the father in them?
(A) D (B) B (C) C (D) A
Solution: A # B indicates A is the mother in the family
B $ C indicates B is the brother of C.
C * D indicates C is the daughter of D.
Since B and C are siblings and A is the mother of B and D is the father of C, D is the father in the family.
Hence, option A is correct.

Question 3: If A + B means A is the mother of B; A x B means A is the father of B; A $ B means A is the

brother of B and A @ B means A is the sister of B then which of the following means P is the son of Q?
(A) Q + R @ P @ N (B) Q + R * P @ N (C) Q x R $ P @ N (D) Q x R $ P $ N
Solution: (D)
Q x R = Q is the father of R [-Q, ±R]
R $ P = R is the brother of P [+ R, ±P]
P $ N = P is the brother of N [+ P, ±N]
Therefore P is the son of Q.

Class 10 Blood Relations 9593751369
 Topic 4: Miscellaneous questions
This section involves the combination of Blood Relations with Directions and Seating Arrangement.

Question 1: The Mishra family went to the photographer for their family photograph. The photographer
arranged them in a straight row facing the North. The family members were Anshu, Rama, Krishna, Deva
and Sonu. Anshu was sitting third to the right of his daughter. Rama was sitting on the immediate right of
Krishna, whose husband was the brother of Rama. Anshu and Sonu were immediate neighbours. Deva
was not an immediate neighbour of Anshu’s son. Deva was sitting at the left end and the mother of Deva
is Krishna, who was the wife of Anshu. Rama and Anshu were immediate neighbours.

(i) How is Deva related to the person who sits in the middle of the row?
(A)Daughter (B) Son (C) Aunt (D) None of these

Solution:
Step 1: From statement two it can be concluded that Rama and Anshu are siblings and hence appear at
the same level as the family tree. Among them, Rama is the sister and Anshu is the brother.
Step 2: From statement five it can be concluded that deva is the child of Krishna and since Krishna is the
wife of Anshu and statement one says Anshu sits third to the right of his daughter, then Deva has to be
the daughter of Anshu and Krishna as Rama is the sister of Krishna and Sonu is the son because they
are immediate neighbours.

Question 2: In a family, there are six members- A, B, C, D, E and F. A and B are a married couple, A
being a male member. D is the only son of C, who is the brother of A. E is the sister of D. B is the
daughter-in-law of F, whose husband has died.

(i) How F has related to A?

(A) Mother (B) Sister-in-law (C) Sister (D) Mother-in-law

(ii) How is E related to C?

(A) Daughter (B) Aunt (C) Cousin (D) Sister

(iii) Who is C to B?
(A) Brother (B) Brother-in-law (C) Son-in-law (D) Nephew

(iv) How many male members are there in the family?

(A) Two (B) Three (C) Four (D) Five

Solution:
The third sentence depicts parent-child relationship i.e. D is the only son of C who’s a brother of A.
Therefore, the diagram is as follows

Now we should look info. that tells more about A, D or C. The second sentence tells us more about
A.
MAT Chapter 5 Bittu Mishra
Class 10 Blood Relations 9593751369
Now we shall add the leftover information and the one that fits the most in the current diagram is the
relationship between D and E.

We have finally reached in the position of completing our tree diagram by incorporating the final
information which is about F who is a female since her husband had died. And B is her daughter-in-law.
Therefore, she’s the mother of A and C.

Since we are done with the family tree we can easily answer all the above question on the basis of this
diagram..

Question 3: Read the information carefully and answer the question given below it.
A family consists of 6 members P, Q , R, X, Y, Z. Q is the son of R but R is not mother of Q. P and R are
married couple. Y is the brother of R, X is the daughter of P. Z is the brother of P.

(i) Who is the brother in law of R?

(ii) How many female members are there in the family?
(iii) How is Q related to X?
(iv) How is Y related to P?
Solution:
Q is son of R. draw this one with thick line in different horizontal rows. Both are male so take as’+’.
Use <=> between P and R in same row, because they are couple.
Add Y to R with dotted line in same row.
Add X to P with thick line downwards to different row. Here, X is ‘–‘.
Add Z to P and take Z as ‘+’.
So, Q and X are brother & sister.
Answers: Brother in law means wife’s brother i.e. Z
Two female members are there with ‘-‘ symbols i.e. P and X.
Q is brother of X.
Y is husband’s brother to P. i.e. brother in law.

Question 4: A and B are brothers & C and D are sisters. A’s son is D’s brother. How is B related to C?
Solution: By using above notations we can draw the below diagram. A, B are taken ‘+’ and C, D
are taken as ‘-’. It seems that A, B belongs to one generation and C, D belongs to another generation.
So, A, B are taken in one horizontal row and C, D are taken in other horizontal line.

It says that A is C’s father. Father’s brother is uncle. So, answer is uncle.

Question 5: There are six persons P, Q, R, S, T, and U in a family. They are a psychologist, Manager,
Lawyer, Jeweler, Doctor, and Engineer. The doctor is the grandfather of U who is a psychologist. The
manager S is married to P. R, the jeweler is married to the Lawyer. Q is the mother of T and U. There are
two married couples in the family.

(i) What is the profession of T?

(A) Doctor (B) Jeweler (C) Psychologist (D) None of these
(ii) How’s P related to T?
(A) Brother (B) Uncle (C) Grandfather (D) Father

(iii) How many male members are there in the family?

(A) One (B) Two (C) Three (D) Can’t be determined
(iv) What is the profession of P?
(A) Doctor (B) Lawyer (C) Jeweler (D) Manager

Solution: We’ll start our tree diagram using the information that Q is the mother of T and U. And as the
sentence doesn’t tell us anything about their profession we will leave the place blank.

Now as we did earlier we’ll now look for some information that involves something more about Q, T, and
U. It tells us that U is a psychologist and the other info is that doctor is a grandfather of U. Now as Q is U’s
mother. This implies Q is the daughter-in-law of the doctor.

Examine that there’s no direct piece of information left that connects any dot with our current family tree.
So, we’ll draw separate tree diagrams for them. The information is that S is married to P and R, the
jeweler is married to a lawyer. Hence,

Note that It’s given there are only two married couples in the family. Therefore, the doctor’s wife must be
alive. Hence S, the manager must be doctor’s wife. And R, the jeweler is married to the lawyer who will be
Q. Nothing could be said about the sex of T and U. But with the first line tells us about the profession of T
i.e. is an engineer. Thus, the family tree looks like:

Again, with help of the above family tree diagram, we can quickly answer all the questions followed the
problem above.
