Module: LIFE SKILLS TEACHING IN THE FOUNDATION PHASE 1: PERSONAL AND SOCIAL WELL-BEING

Case Study Below:

Jose loves playing soccer and climbing the jungle gyms during free playtime. He finds activities
particularly interesting because that is what the older boys do. On the soccer field, he likes keeping
the soccer ball to himself; however, he tries to pass the ball to other players from time to time. He
knows that he is expected to share the ball with the rest of the players in his team. Just recently, you
observed that he shared his lunch with a classmate who forgot to bring their own.

As his Grade 3 teacher, you decide to do a more detailed background inspection on Jose. A
telephone call with Jose’s mother reveals that he lives with his grandmother and three sisters in a
two-room RDP house in a township. The house is in unsafe neighborhood where robbery and gang
fights are an order of the day. Jose’s mother works far from home to send them money every
month. He misses his mother very much and just recently, his mother lost her job at the
supermarket, and his grandmother had to take on a job in town to help with finances. Jose now has
to look after his younger sisters every day after school because his grandmother returns home only
at 19h00. He tries to cook so that his sisters can eat before they go to bed. Jose studies hard and
does his homework every day. His goal is to go to university and become a teacher one day so he can
be a provider for his family
