INTRODUCTION

Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) play a crucial role in shaping and

transforming societies across the globe. These organizations are independent of
government control and operate with the primary goal of addressing various social,
environmental, and humanitarian issues. NGOs are driven by a commitment to
making a positive impact on communitiesand advocating for change on both local
and international levels.

NGOs encompass a diverse range of entities, including charities, advocacygroups,

development organizations, and grassroots movements. They operate in areas such as
healthcare, education, human rights, environmental conservation, and disaster relief,
among others. Unlike governmental bodies, NGOs often have the flexibility to act
swiftly and creatively, bridging gaps where official institutions may face limitations.

One of the key characteristics of NGOs is their reliance on voluntary contributions,

either from individuals or other entities, to fund their initiatives. This reliance on public
support enhances their ability to connectwith the community and fosters a sense of
collective responsibility for addressing societal challenges.

NGOs often collaborate with governments, businesses, and internationalbodies to

leverage resources and expertise. This collaboration enables them to implement
effective and sustainable solutions to complex problems. Additionally, NGOs serve
as advocates for marginalized communities, giving a voice to those who may
otherwise go unheard.

In this dynamic landscape, NGOs contribute significantly to building a more equitable

and compassionate world. As catalysts for positive change, they embody the spirit of
civic engagement and exemplify the collective power of individuals and organizations
working towards a shared vision ofa better future.

VOLUNTEER WORK UNDERTAKEN AT THE NGO

Before we were assigned any volunteer work, we were first asked to

participate in an orientation programme/meeting with our volunteer
coordinator, wherein we were introduced to the NGO, its values and
what it stands for. We were then explained what was expected of us as
volunteers and also introduced to our site coordinators. Later on, we were
also filled in on more information from our co-ordinator’s side and were
assigned the tasks that were to be completed. Apart from our on-site
duties, we were also asked to perform certain online activities such as
helping in the creation of posts for their social media handles.

For our first visit, we were assigned two classes 4th grade and 6th grade.
We decided to keep things simple as this would have been the first time
we were going to be interacting with the children. So, when we reached
the NGO, we introduced ourselves- who we are, where we’re from, what
we planned on doing that day, etc. The students greeted us with
excitement and told us about themselves. After the introductions were
over, we taught them Fractions in Mathematics and took dictation in
Hindi according to their curriculum.

In our subsequent visits, we conducted activities more suited for the

development of their general knowledge, physical and cognitive abilities.

CHALLENGES FACED AND SOLUTIONS ADOPTED

Our sessions went smoothly overall as the students were obedient, diligent and carefully
listened and answered to whatever we taught and asked during the class. However, the
path to achieving success in this endeavour wasn’t without its own fair share of
problems.
There were some challenges that we faced during our visits to the NGO but with the
support of NGO staff and teachers we were able to overcome them without any
difficulty. Some of the problems we faced were-

Limited Resources:
▪ Limited educational materials and resources for teaching.
▪ Lack of proper infrastructure and classrooms.

Resolution:

▪ Collaborated with the NGO to identify essential teaching materials needed.

▪ Initiated fundraising efforts to acquire necessary resources.
▪ Organized classroom setup initiatives to create a conducive learning
environment.

Language Barriers:

▪ Language differences between teachers and students leading to

communication challenges.

Resolution:

▪ Implemented visual aids and interactive teaching methods to bridge

language gaps.
▪ Recruited bilingual volunteers to assist in translation and communication.

Attendance and Punctuality:

▪ Irregular attendance and tardiness among some students.

Resolution:

▪ Introduced incentives and rewards for consistent attendance and

punctuality.
▪ Conducted awareness sessions on the importance of regular attendance.
Health and Hygiene:

▪ Health issues affecting some students, hindering their regular

participation.
▪ Lack of hygiene awareness among students.

Resolution:

▪ Conducted health check-up camps in collaboration with healthcare

organizations.
▪ Organized hygiene workshops to educate students about cleanliness and
personal hygiene.

Infrastructure and Facilities:

▪ Insufficient infrastructure for extracurricular activities.

▪ Lack of proper facilities for physical education and sports.

Resolution:

▪ Initiated fundraising campaigns to improve infrastructure and build

sports facilities.
▪ Collaborated with local authorities to enhance community facilities for
educational and recreational purposes.

OBSERVATIONS
Providing these types of services in NGOs we can help children overcome the challenges
they may face in their education and improve their academic performance, leading to
better opportunities and a brighter future. We had a great time teaching such wonderful
students and doing such volunteer work gave us immense joy.

We also arranged stationery materials such as pencils, pens, sheets and much more for
the children and they were really happy.

FEEDBACK OF OUR VOLUNTEER WORK

At the end of each session, we distributed stationery among students. We

asked them of their opinion on the activities we conducted that day and, on
our participation, overall.
Their responses were-

1. The students were appreciative of the fact that we did not stick
to only teaching them, and instead devoted time to also having fun
2. The students felt seen and heard, especially because of the talent show
3. They also gave a positive response in terms of whether their
problems were resolved or not
4. We devoted adequate time to addressing the problems of the students
5. They were happy as we provided them with refreshments

We were touched by their responses. We assured them that we will be

visiting them again and this time with more fun activities and fun
lessons.

CONCLUSION

The volunteering work at JAX Foundation resulted in a very enriching

experience for all the group members. It enabled us to learn some valuable
lessons which are as follows –

1. It taught us the importance of helping out others in need

2. It taught us that we should always come forward and take
initiative for providing equal opportunities
3. It taught us that we should always be compassionate towards the needy
4. It taught us that we should always support other’s dreams
5. It taught us that we should always try and solve problems and
not run away from it

In conclusion, it allowed us to learn a lot of valuable lessons that we are sure

will help us in the long run.

We would like to thank JAX Foundation for giving us the opportunity to

volunteer for underprivileged students and sharing happiness with them.

This project taught us many valuable things and gave us a whole new
experience and outlook altogether. However one must not stop volunteering
at this level, rather we should involve in such endeavours more in the future
and inspire others to involve in such noble causes and make education
accessible for one and all.
