Ampère’s
Force Law.
IZ B A S A R
The magnetic force on
a current carrying conductor:

If a current starts to flow through the rod,

a magnetic field will be formed around it,
Figure a. The magnetic field strength on
the left side of the wire will increase and
on the right side it will decrease due to
the wire's magnetic field. Magnetic force
acts towards the weaker regions of the
magnetic field. So wire will experience a
force due to the static magnetic field as
shown in Figure b.
RHR-2

The right hand rule-2 (RHR-2) indicates the

direction of the magnetic force. In this rule,
your fingers represent the direction of the
magnetic field, your thumb shows the direction
of current, and your palm indicates the
direction of the force. The magnitude of the
magnetic force is directly proportional to the
current (I) in the wire, the length (L) of the wire
in the magnetic field, and the magnetic field
strength (B). The force is strongest when the
wire is perpendicular to the field lines.
RHR-2
Thus we have:

F = B × I × L × sin(ɑ)
Figure 156 shows the variation of
force with angle ɑ. When the field
lines and wire are parallel to each
other, the wire experiences no

force. At other angles the force is
proportional to sin ɑ.
