1.0 Purpose
• To standardize personal protective equipment and safety devices to be used in
project sites.
• To ensure that the PPE & Safety Devices at Sites meet the specified requirements.
• To establish a system of regular checking of PPE & Safety Devices
• To ensure all PPE requirements of Contractors and its subcontractors employees
involved in the project are identified.
• To ensure the use of properly fitted and effective PPE for specific jobs.
• To establish a procedure detailing accountability for selection, use, inspection and
to evaluate the effectiveness of the PPE program
• To regulate the standard of PPE supplied to all employees
• The sub-contractor shall be responsible for ensuring its personnel use the mandatory
PPE at all times and, this PPE shall be suitable to the task/risk
• Collective and self-acting protection always has priority over any other specific or
additional PPE to the mandatory PPE required on the project site.
• When collective protection measures which reduce and control any risk are
insufficient, or are impossible to implement, individual protection is compulsory.
• All PPE shall be in full compliance with the Applicable Laws, codes and Standard;
Contractor reserves the right to impose a minimum standard for PPE
• The Sub-contractors shall be responsible for providing its personnel with appropriate
training in the use, maintenance and storage of all PPE
• The Sub-contractors shall be responsible to ensure that all PPE is stored and
maintained in accordance with the manufacturer’s specification, kept in good
condition and is replaced when damaged or defective.
• The Sub-contractor’s personnel are responsible to use/wear the PPE provided to
them by their employer.
• They shall also inform their employer immediately of any damage, defect or fault
with the PPE.
• The Subcontractor is responsible to replace any damaged PPE immediately.

2.0 TERMINOLOGY
• PPE’s: Personal Protective Equipment, they are designed and used by employees at
project sites for physical protection of body parts. It is the last protection of
hierarchies of control measures.
3.0 PROCEDURE
• Periodical Inspection:
PPEs and safety devices will be inspected on regular basis by the users. Site safety
team will educate the users on mandatory points to be checked before use of PPEs
and safety devices.
Site safety team will also inspect these at point of use during regular inspection.
Any defective / faulty PPEs and safety devices will be discarded immediately.

• The contractor shall be responsible to provide all the necessary PPEs to his
employees for undertaking the work in a safe manner.
• All workers are shall be provided with all necessary PPE at the Site.
• This shall, as a minimum, meet Indian National Standards (IS / BIS / ANSI / EN
marked) and includes:

A. Safety Helmet
• Conformance to standard
➢ Safety helmets shall be as per IS 2925 - 2005 or DGMS or shall have
internationally recognized certification such as CE, UL Mark.
• Specification
➢ Helmet shall be compatible with other ancillary equipment such as earmuffs,
welder's shields, face shield, Miners Cap Lamp etc.
➢ Suspension shall be “Nape Type” or Ratchet Type”.
➢ Chin Strap shall be 15 mm width and 55 cm long with buckle for adjustability.
➢ Shell - Hard & smoothly finished HDPE/PVC material.

B. Safety Harness
• Conformance to standard
➢ Full Body Harness shall be as per IS 3521 – 2009 (Third Revision) or shall have
DGMS certification or any internationally recognized certification such as CE,
UL mark.
• Webbing
➢ The webbing shall be made of polypropylene.
• Buckles
➢ Buckles shall be of friction type and no slip type design.
• Hardware Fittings
➢ It shall be corrosion resistant, electroplated & forged.

D. Safety Shoes
• Conformance to standard
The safety shoe used shall be certified to any one of the Indian Standard given
below or any internationally recognized certification like CE, UL mark.
➢ IS 1989: Part 2: 1992 Specification for Leather Safety Boots and Shoes - Part
2: For Heavy Metal Industries.
➢ IS 11226: 2007 - Leather safety footwear having direct moulded rubber sole –
Specification.
➢ IS 14544: 2008 Leather safety footwear with direct moulded PVC soles –
Specification.
➢ IS 15298: Part 1: 2002 Safety, Protective and Occupational Footwear for
Professional Use - Part 1: Requirements and Test Methods.
➢ IS 15298: Part 2: 2002 Safety, Protective and Occupational Footwear for

E. Optional Requirements
• Shock-proof Safety Shoes - Shock proof shoes shall be used wherever hazard of
electric shock exist. Nonconductive hard toe is used instead of steel toe.
• Safety Shoes with Puncture Resistance - Where ever hazard of puncture exist
safety shoes with steel mid sole can be used to protect against the objects like
nails etc.
• Safety Shoes with antiskid characteristics
F. Warning Tape
• HDPE or LDPE

every foot with white and red strips on both sides in Tubular form.
G. Safety Nets
• The size of the net shall be as per site requirement. Unit of measurement for

I. Ear Muff/Plug
• Ear Muff / Ear Pug shall confirm to IS: 9167-2007or shall have the certification
from DGMS or any other international certification such as CE or UL Mark.
J. Eye Protection
• Goggles, Safety Spectacles, Face Shield shall confirm to IS: 5983 – 2007 or shall
have the certification from DGMS or any other international certification such as
CE or UL Mark.
K. Hand Gloves
• The fit of gloves should be such that the fingers should have ample room.
• CANVAS Gloves canvas – stitching with nylon thread – conforming to IS: 6994-
(part-I) 2007
• Crome leather gloves – 14” stitching with nylon thread - conforming to IS: 6994-
(part-I) 2007.
• Rubber Gloves – 18”(380/450mm long) electrical grade, tested to 15000 volts -
conforming to IS: 4770-2006.
• Cotton Gloves (for material handling) Leather cum canvas-304mm long, double
leather for five finger type, double stitching spaced at 1mm. - conforming to IS:
6994-(part-I) 2007.
• PPE matrix should be referred for identifying requirement of PPEs pertaining to
job. Moreover, HIRA register will be referred in case of critical activities for
ensuring required mandatory PPEs.

5.0 RESPONSIBILITY
• Employees shall regularly check their PPE’s & Safety devices for wear or tear
before using.
• Store In-charge shall maintain PPE stock register with minimum stock criteria,
and inform EHSO respectively.
