19
HORIZONTAL DIRECTIONAL DRILLING
TRENCHLESS TECH

The JT3020/JT4020/JT60 can install underground cable, conduit

and pipes (steel, HDPE etc.) beneath busy streets, motor ways and
sensitive areas with little or no disruption to landscapes or
structures. Especially in urban areas, trenchless construction can
significantly lower overall costs of projects by eliminating a large
work force and restoration team that would be required by using
the normal excavation method. This is a significant factor in the
race against time and spiraling costs associated with this type of
industry.
The Jet Trac JT3020/JT5/JT60 of Ditch Witch is a remarkable,
compact, maneuverable machine and has the power to bore and
pull back 8 inch materials over a distance in excess of 600 feet in
compatible soils including sand and rock. The key features of this
system are:
Extraordinary power in a self contained self-mobilizing system for
long distances.
Operational packages for high production directional boring
through rock.
Highly secure anchoring system and fully mechanized pipe
makeup / breakout.
Dual fluid tank system allows mixing in one tank while boring with
fluid from a second system.
Complete electrical strike system.

20
CABLE INSTALLATION BY PLOUGHING
MOLEPLOUGH

Predominant installation method for FOC cable installation for

longhaul project.
The laying depth is continuously variable down to a depth of
1200mm-1300mm below ground level. To control the laying
depth on uneven surfaces, the plough is equipped with a purpose
designed Pantograph type of unit, which ensures that the cable is
laid always at the correct depth.
Up to maximum six cables including the warning tapes (terra
tape) may be laid simultaneously. To allow Ploughing operation
close to fences and boundaries, the cable laying section can be
moved side ways.
This appropriately manufactured cable laying section results in a
faster rate of cable laying with no danger of damage for all types
of cables including fragile coaxial and fibre optic cables.
The chute of the cable laying section is equipped with free
wheeling rollers, and the maximum bending radius is one (1)
meter. The section can be removed manually in case the plough
strikes an obstacle and the cable can be exposed and taken out of
the cable-laying chute, to allow the plough to be shifted above
ground level, without damaging the cable.
All operations of the mole plough are carried out hydraulically.
The cable laying section is vibration-free and therefore suitable
for all type of cables. The cable laying section can be detached
and changed for any cable with different diameters.

21
SAND STABILIZATION
SANDFIX

Sandfix-C is prepared from concentrated solution of polymer

modified styrene acrylic copolymer resin with specially designed
plasticizer, it can control the soil from strong drifting sand dunes
and stabilize unpaved plant areas.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
Being an excellent tackifier, it shows outstanding properties to
resist to erosion due to water, wind and other environmental
condition. It contains special wetting agent gives excellent

26
AERIAL CABLE INSTALLATION
MOVING REEL & STATIONARY METHOD

THE MOVING REEL (or “Drive Off”) Method is used when the entire route is accessible by support vehicles.
The route must be free of trees, limbs, and guy wires to allow full vehicle access. Support vehicles are used to
pay off and raise the fiber cable to temporary support hardware. Once the cable is in position, it is transferred
to the permanent support hardware.

27
27
AERIAL CABLE INSTALLATION
STATIONARY REEL METHOD

The Stationary Reel Method is typically used when the route is not fully accessible by
support vehicles. The cable is pulled into place from a stationary reel located at one
end of the section run, and supported by temporary hardware. Once the cable is in
position, it is transferred to the permanent support hardware.

SPLICING & TESING PROCEDURES

SPLICING & TERMINATION OF FOC CABLES

Splicing of all optical fiber cables shall be carried out by means of a calibrated fusion splicing machine and Optical
Fiber Cleaver (See Equipment Required)
The theoretical splice loss reading which is displayed on the fusion splicing machine shall be kept to maximum of
0.05 dB to reduce the number of re-splicing.
All data corresponding to the Theoretical Splice Loss shall be recorded on the Theoretical Splice Loss Test.
The actual splice loss of each individual splice shall be equal to or less than the stated splice loss in the contractual
specifications.

34

FIBER TECHNOLOGY
SPLICING & TESING PROCEDURES

SPLICE LOSS AND CONTINUITY

Actual Splice Loss
Once the cables have been spliced, each individual splice loss shall be measured in both directions by means of an
OTDR at the wavelength of 1550nm for single mode and 1310nm for multimode. The average of both results shall
be taken to produce the “Actual Splice Loss”.
If this loss is greater than the contractual stated splice loss on any two fibers spliced, then the splice shall be re-
made. A maximum of three (3) attempts to re-splice a particular high fiber shall made to bring the actual splice loss
within the contractual specifications.
If any actual splice loss result does not comply to the contractual specifications and three (3) attempts to rectify the
splice have been made, then the engineer responsible for the contract shall review the test results before an
relaxation of the specifications are made.
All data corresponding to the Actual Splice Loss shall be recorded on the Actual Splice Loss Test Form (Annex #2C,
Splice Test Form).
OTDR Traces of each individual fiber between regen or repeater sites shall be taken at 1310/1550nm for single
mode cables and 1310nm for multimode cables and saved to disk for documentation and future investigation.

Continuity
Once all the individual splice losses fall within the contractual specifications, continuity of each individual fiber shall
be tested by means of an optical fiber talk set to ensure continuity between two regens or repeater sites.

35
35
FIBER TECHNOLOGY
SPLICING & TESING PROCEDURES

SPLICE LOSS AND CONTINUITY

Power Meter
Once the splice loss and continuity tests have been carried out, End to End Power Meter test shall be taken to
determine the loss of an individual section of the cable which has been completely spliced, terminated and cleared
of any faults.
The test shall be taken using Optical Fiber Light Source and Power Meter from one point of termination to other.
The Power Meter reading shall be equal to or lower than the maximum allowed Power Loss Budget which shall be
calculated using the Formula:

Budget Loss Formula

(DB/Km x L) + (SL x NS) + 2 x CL dB = Maximum Permitted Budget Loss

36
36
FIBER TECHNOLOGY
SPLICING & TESING PROCEDURES

POLARIZATION MODE DISPERSION (PMD)

PMD testing is becoming a requirement when the transmission bit rate per channel rises or with the increase of the
corresponding distance. It appears that the measurement shall be at least performed when the bit rate is equal or
higher than 10 Gb/s. However, for fibers older than 1996 or for some applications, such as analog cable TV
applications, lower transmission bit rates will be affected by PMD.
As a summary, the main circumstances in which PMD measurement will be required are:
• Qualification during fiber manufacturing
• Qualification during cable manufacturing
• Installation of new fiber networks, for 10 Gb/s bit rate or higher.
• Installation of ultra long haul networks at 2.5 Gb/s or higher
• Upgrade of current networks for 10 Gb/s bit rate or higher
Fiber and cable manufacturers are specifying their fibers with 0.5 ps/√km maximum, according to the ITU-T
recommendations. However, current manufactured fibers are easily better than 0.2 .ps/√km
As PMD is a statistical measurement and, because it is sensitive to external environment, it is recommended to
perform different measurements at different time intervals so that long term fluctuation of PMD can be monitored,
providing better records of the fiber cable.

POLARIZATION MODE DISPERSION (PMD)

Bi-refringence
• External Stress causes birefringence

• Imperfect fiber design causes birefringence

38
38
FIBER TECHNOLOGY
SPLICING & TESING PROCEDURES

CHROMATIC DISPERSION (CD)

It is a result different wavelengths traveling at different speeds of the non zero spectral width of transmitters. Since
transmitters are actually made up of several wavelengths and each wavelength travels at a different speed, the
difference in arrival time of each wavelength causes pulse spreading or (chromatic) dispersion. This phenomenon is
measured in ps/nm.
CD tests are typically set up to measure across a variety of fiber types. For example, a typical CD set up would
measure from 1520nm to 1630nm in 10nm increments. The results are then plotted and graphed. The results
include the dispersion slope, zero dispersion point and delay ps/nm.

 Chromatic Dispersion is NOT a pass/fail reading

 The results determine if dispersion compensation is required.
 The results are required for network engineering for proper transmission and network element requirements
and placement

39
39
FIBER TECHNOLOGY
SPLICING & TESING PROCEDURES

CABLE DAMAGE REPAIR

Repair by Flexing
The cable can be repaired by removing the outer sheath and exposing the loose tubes allowing the damaged
section of cables to be massaged therefore removing any pressure from the fiber that may be causing the loss of
transmission. This method can considerably decrease the loss over the damaged point by removing the micro bends
that have been caused due the damaged cable.
A zipper type heat shrink must then be placed over the exposed section of the cable to protect the fibers and
prevent ingress of moisture.

Cable Cut/Repair
If a cable has been cut preventing the above method to be utilized, then permission must be sought from the
engineer in charge of the project before any additional splices can be added to the damaged cable section in
question.
It can be done by replacing a minimum of 200 meters of Fiber Optic Cable from the damaged / Cut Cable section
and therefore adding extra splice points to the damaged Section.

Any damaged cable section that has been discovered before or during installation, by OTDR tests or work
observations after Installation shall be documented and reported immediately to the Engineer in charge of the
project.
