How many times have you heard a

is no longer a need to learn how to size

Metallic inks have small metal
particles that, when printed, rise to
the top to give off a metallic shine.

Metallic inks can be used on both

coated and uncoated paper. It is
suggested that you use metallic
inks on coated paper as it has a
harder surface to grab onto and the
metallic effect shows up better.

If you’re looking for maximum shine and not satisfied

with the more dull shine of a metallic ink, try foil
stamping.

Foil stamping is not really an ink at all, but the

application of a very thin metal foil on top of a given
area. When dried it reflects light and looks like
genuine metallic material.

This means you can use foil stamping with uncoated

matte paper without loosing the vibrancy and shine.

PAPER EFFECTS

EMBOSSING
For a super finished look you can do what is called embossing on your
printing projects. This process uses a two metal plates (and heat) to
stamp together and create a raised effect as seen in the photo above.

It provides texture to the print and allows certain parts of the design to
be raised while others remain flat.

The opposite effect is called debossing, in which a metal plate imprints

the paper downward as shown in the photo below.

Embossing does require a thick enough paper weight, so you need to

discuss with your printer if an embossing effect will work with your
chosen paper stock.

DEBOSSING
You can also combine foil stamping and embossing to give your foil
effect a more dramatic look. The photo to the left is a wine label that
uses embossing and gold foil. Both of these are usually applied at
the same time to assure proper treatment.

“A” series paper sizes are the most commonly used sizes in the A1
world. As a designer who is based in the United States (one of the
only countries that does not commonly use the A series paper

I am used to.

The A series paper has a ratio of 1:1.4142. That means each size A2
doubles in size. A1 is twice as large as A2 and A2 is twice as large
as A3 and so on.

A4 is the typical size you will see used in home and office printers A3

TEST PRINTS OF “PROOFS” ARE HELPFUL
Are you wondering how an ink color or size might

at your screen?

Printers have two ways you can proof your file

before you give the final approval to get your files
printed. One is a digital proof which is usually just a

that can be printed and mailed to you. These usually

T-shirts might be one of the easiest files to

Vector format (or .eps) is the standard

printer, but some print on demand may
require just a .png file for each side.

I also like to provide a finished mockup to

show the printer the proper sizing and
placement of the graphic for each side.

There are two main ways to print t-shirts

which we will talk about below.

SCREEN PRINTING
AKA SILK SCREEN PRINTING
This is the traditional method of
applying ink to cloth. You would
create a silkscreen with one color
for each silkscreen and slowly
imprint the ink to the t-shirt one ink
at a time. This is similar to offset
printing.

The cost of printing the t-shirt is

determined by how many different
colors you use because the printer
