OPERATION PROCEDURE

Equipment Type Wood Lathe

Equipment Code WL-002

Location Practical Work Area

Operational Procedure:

PRE-OPERATIONAL SAFETY CHECKS


1. Examine the machine for obvious damage. If damaged report
suspect machinery and do not use
2. Select appropriate location for operation of the lathe clear of
walkways and providing safe egress
3. Ensure that the machine has been tested and tagged for currency.
4. Use correct lifting procedures when lifting and replacing lathe on
trolley (2 people if practical)
5. Ensure lathe is stable and secure before operation a. Lock MOBILE
platform wheels if on a mobile trolley b. Clamp or secure to workbench
or similar stable stand if not attached to stand.
6. Ensure no slip/trip hazards are present in workspaces and
walkways.
7. Locate and ensure you are familiar with the operation of the
ON/OFF starter and E-Stop
8. Check that all guards are in position.
9. Ensure the workpiece has been suitably prepared for the lathe
operation.
10.Workpiece must be securely fastened to face plate, chuck or
between centres.
11. Adjust speed to suit the diameter of the work and turning
operation.
12. Rotate the work piece by hand to check clearance between tool rest
and bed BEFORE switching on.

13. Ensure the cutting tools are sharp and in good condition.
14. Attach and start the dust extraction unit if provided before using
the machine.
