STRENGTH OF MATERIALS-II
Subject Code : ME-202
Paper ID : [A0808]
Time : 3 Hrs. Max. Marks : 60

INSTRUCTION TO CANDIDATES :
1. SECTION-A is COMPULSORY consisting of TEN questions carrying T WO marks
each.
2. SECTION-B contains FIVE questions carrying FIVE marks each and students
has to attempt any FOUR questions.
3. SECTION-C contains T HREE questions carrying T EN marks each and students
has to attempt any T WO questions.

SECTION-A
1. Write briefly :
1. How do you differentiate strain energy and shear strain energy?
2. What is the point of change of open coiled spring to closed coiled spring?
3. Why do we call leaf spring a spring of uniform strength?
4. Lame’s theory on thick cylinders is based on certain assumptions, write those.
5. What is link radius as applicable to curved beams?
6. Draw a rough curve for distribution of shear stress in simply supported circular beam
for a uniform load.
7. Define Castigliano’s theorem.
8. Show variation of thickness w.r t. radius of rotating disc of uniform strength.
9. If all the theories of failures are applicable to all materials then which theory allows
maximum domain of applied stress.
10. Give practical applications of thick and thin cylinders.

SECTION-B
2. A static concentrated load of 10 kN applied to a simply supported beam at mid-span,
produces a deflection of 6mm and a maximum bending stress of 25 MN/mm2.
Calculate the maximum value of the momentary stress produced when a mass of 500 kg
is made to fall through a height of 18 mm on to the beam at the middle of the span.

3. In a two-dimensional stress system the direct stresses on two mutually perpendicular
planes are  and 120 MN/mm2. In addition these planes carry a shear stress of
40 MN/mm2. Find the value of  at which the shear strain energy is the least. If the
failure occurs at this value of strain energy, find the elastic limit of the material in
tension. Factor of safety may be taken as 3.
4. A quarter elliptical leaf spring 80mm long is subjected to a point load of 1 tonne.
If the bending stress and deflection is not to exceed 3.2 tonne/cm2 and 8cm respectively,
find the suitable size and number of plates required taking the width as 8 times the
thickness. Take E = 2000 tonne/cm2.
5. A T-shaped cross section of a beam shown in Fig. 1 is subjected to a vertical shear force
of 10 t. Calculate the shear stress at the neutral axis and at the junction of the web and the
flange. Moment of inertia about the horizontal axis is 11340 cm4.

6. A grinding wheel is 300mm diameter with the bore at the centre of 25 mm diameter.
If the thickness of the wheel at the outer radius is 25 mm, what should be the thickness at
the bore diameter for a uniform allowable stress of 10 MN/mm2 at 2800 r.p.m.
Take density of the wheel material as 2700 kg/m3.
SECTION-C
7. Two thick cylinders A and B of the same size have external diameter twice the internal
diameter. Cylinder A is subjected to internal pressure only, while cylinder B is subjected
to external pressure only. Calculate the ratio of these pressures when :
a) The largest hoop stress in the two cases are equal in magnitude.
b) The largest circumferential strains in the two cases are numerically equal.
Take poisson’s ratio = 0.3.
8. A crane hook whose horizontal cross-section is trapezoidal, 50 mm wide at the inside and
25 mm wide at the outside, thickness 50 mm carries a vertical load of 1000 Kg whose
line of action is 38 mm from the inside edge of this section. The centre of curvature is
50 mm from the inside edge. Calculate the maximum tensile and compressive stresses
set up.
9. Derive Castigliano’s theorem.
