ACKNOWLEDGMENT

This module is based on long hours of reading, researching, consulting and

verifying information with the help of God and the people around me, who provided
me with encouragement to start the project, persevere with it and finish it. The
conceptualization of this project would not have been possible without the challenges
presented by my students in Community Engagement, Solidarity and Citizenship.
Truly, it is because of them that I decided to write this reference material.

I am grateful to my supervisors including the School Principal Nestor O.

Dalay-on, and Assistant Principal Madison B. Kiong of Benguet National High School
for their continued support and confidence in my work. A special word of gratitude is
due to Ma’am Jenefer C. Tiongan for her constant reminder of my progress. I am
also grateful to the members of the school, district and division LRMS Committee for
sacrificing their time in evaluating this project.

Lastly, my gratitude to my family and friends who never stopped believing in

me despite my self-doubts. Special mention is deserved by my mother, Myrna
Bugtong, who did the household chores while I just sat in front of my laptop all day.

What I Need to Know

Good day my dear learners! I hope you are ready for another week of
fun learning.

If you recall, one of the primary aims of this subject is to enhance

your sense of shared identity and willingness to contribute to the pursuit of
the common good of the community. All the previous lessons on community,
shared identity and diversity, to name a few, have helped you recognize the
value of community action initiatives. After learning all of these things, it is
now time for you to ask youself, “How then can I contribute to community
development?”. In order to help you answer this question, this module
enumerates various forms of community engagements which you can choose
from in your journey towards becoming a good citizen.

Instructions to the Facilitator:

To the parents and guardians, please take note of your role in the
accomplishment of this module. You are allowed to help the learner in
comprehending the lesson and understanding the instructions in the
activities and assessments. However, please refrain from personally
answering the questions so as not to encourage learning dependence. Also,
please check the completeness of the learner’s output before the date for
scheduled submission.

Instructions to the Learner:

In order to get the most from this module, you need to be properly
guided. Begin by reading the expected learning outcomes to inform you of
what you should know and be able to do at the end of this module. Read the
lesson content and do the required activities and assessments with the help
of your facilitator. However, you should not let your facilitator answer the
module questions. You may also use offline and online learning resources
such as dictionaries if you encounter unfamiliar words and concepts. Make
sure to accomplish everything in this module before submission.

At the end of this module, you are expected to:

✓ define the various forms of community engagement;

✓ classify activities under the forms of community engagement; and
✓ relate concepts of solidarity with the forms of community engagement.

What’s New

Activity 2: Article Analysis

To introduce the new lesson, read the following excerpt from an article.

Japanese National in Baguio City Voluntarily and Regularly

Cleans an Overpass There For Free
-Daniel Feliciano, November 29, 2014
Japan is known for a lot of things. One of these is the Japanese people's enviable
discipline when it comes to living their lives.
A couple of years ago when a tsunami ravaged swathes of the Japanese
coastline, people lined up and patiently waited for their turns in receiving relief goods or
when buying from still-standing businesses. The scenes are very different from what we
regularly see in other countries wherein everything's a mess and there's always rampant
looting.
Another great thing about the Japanese people is that they show the same
discipline when they are in other countries. A perfect example of this was witnessed by
the world when Japanese football fans picked up their trash during the conclusions of
matches at the World Cup games in Brazil a few months ago. They didn't leave the
stadium until their designated seats were free from litter.
Now, a Japanese national in Baguio City is showing the same thing. Mazakasu
Nose regularly trudges up the stairs of the overpass connecting Maharlika and Tiong
San to pick up trash. He always bring along with him a black garbage bag and a tong to
pick up litter on the overpass.

Photo by Celayca Aviles via Facebook.

Baguio resident Celayca Aviles took photos of Nose and posted them online. The photos
quickly went viral. And deservedly so. This man deserves a pat on the back for
sacrificing his time and resources in trying to help keep the city free from litter.

1. What is the main story of the article you just read?

2. What do you think is the goal of Mazakasu?
Is it something personal or social?

3. Are you willing to do the same for your community
