Define network and its types?

 Network is the interconnection of a set of devices capable of communication.

 Where all the devices are connected by the communication link.
 Each device is a node which is capable of sending and receiving messages.
Types: LAN,WAN,MAN

Define data communication and its characteristics

 Data communications are the exchange of data between two devices via some form of transmission
medium such as a wire cable.
1. Delivery 2.accuracy 3.timeliness and 4.jitter.
List the parameters used to measure the performance of computer networks?
 Depending on the number of users also the performance is determined. It is often evaluated using
two metrics .They are
 Throughput
 Delay

Define network and its criteria.

 Network is the interconnection of a set of devices capable of communication.
The criteria that network possess to be efficient is performance, security, reliability.
What is meant by connection and its types?
 The network is two or more devices connected through links.
 A link is a communications pathway that transfers data from one device to another.
 So for communication to occur two devices must be connected in some way to the same link and at
the same time.
 Two possible connections are
1. Point to point connection 2.Multi point or Multi drop connection

What is point to point and multipoint connection?

 Point-to-Point connection provides a dedicated link between two devices.
 A multipoint (also called multidrop) connection is one in which more than two specific devices
share a single link.

Define protocol.
 A protocol is a set of rules that govern the data communications.
 It represents an agreement between communicating devices.

Define topology and its types?

 The term physical topology refers to the way in which a network is laid out physically.
 Two or more devices connect to a link; two or more links form a topology.
 There are four basic topologies possible:
 Mesh, star, bus, and ring.

What is protocol layering?

 When communication is simple, we may need only one simple protocol ;
When the communication is complex, we may need to divide the task between different layers, in which
case we need a protocol at each layer or it is said as protocol layering.
What is OSI model? List the layers in it.
 OSI- Open System Interconnection is developed by ISO standard that covers all aspects of network
communication.
 An OSI is a set of protocols that allows any regardless of their underlying architecture.
 It is the layered frame work for the design of network system that allows communication between all
types of communication systems.
 It is made up of 7 layers. They are
