Switch Series Plan

Kingdom People
August 18-October 6

OVERVIEW: Who are we? Where do we belong? What difference do we make? These are the
questions that we’re all hoping to find answers to. Sadly, the answers the world offers don’t truly
satisfy the longings of our soul. It is only through the Gospel of Jesus and commitment to His
kingdom that we are able to find answers that are good and true. That’s why we are kicking off
the fall semester of Switch by immersing ourselves into Jesus’ most famous teaching on the
kingdom of God: The Sermon on the Mount. It’s three chapters of spiritual punch after spiritual
punch intended to knock us off balance, confront our assumptions, challenge our commitment,
and reshape our understanding of what it means to be human so that we can live more faithfully
as disciples of Jesus. Together, with the words of Jesus as our guide, we will discover what it
means to be Kingdom People.

WHAT DO WE WANT STUDENTS TO KNOW?

Switch is a place where they can belong, discover who they are, and live in such a way that they
are able to make a difference in their communities. All of that is possible through committing
ourselves to the Gospel Jesus announced, and the kingdom He established. All of us have been
invited to be a part of His kingdom. What is a kingdom? A people ruled by a king. The kingdom
of God is the people of God ruled by God. Living according to that kingdom means being led by
Jesus, shaped by grace, and moved by love. Being led by Jesus means following His example
and adopting His lifestyle. The way of Jesus combined with the truth of the Gospel is what
brings us the life He promised. Being shaped by grace means opening ourselves up to the
transformative power of God so we can be changed from the inside out. Discipleship to Jesus is
the process of becoming like Jesus for the sake of others. Being moved by love means allowing
the love of God in us to work through us for the good of others. Jesus did not come to be served
but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many. That’s what it means to be Kingdom
People: Led by Jesus. Shaped by Grace. Moved by Love.

WHAT DO WE WANT STUDENTS TO FEEL?

Students should feel hopeful that Switch, as an expression of the Church, is a place where they
can discover who they are, where they belong, and what difference they were created to
make—inspired by the love and grace of Jesus.
WHAT DO WE WANT STUDENTS TO DO?
Embrace the process of becoming a kingdom person. Adopt the way of Jesus. Come back next
week, and bring their friends.

DISCUSSION TIME: Throughout this series, we will have message guides. These will replace
the standard leader guides and be available to everyone at Switch. Not only will these guides be
a helpful resource for taking notes and following along with the message, but will also create
space for students and leaders to share their questions with one another. During small group
time, students and leaders will be able to share the questions they have, and process them
together. If there’s a question they don’t get to or need more information about, point them to our
new YouTube show, Switch Uncut, where we address these unanswered questions every week.
