EXPECTATIONS:
At this time, it is expected that you already know the multiplication facts and the concept
about volume.
With the help of this module, you will be able to learn skills in finding the volume of a
rectangular prism using the steps in solving problems that can also be very useful in real- life
situations.
After using this module, you are expected to:
• solve routine and non- routine problems involving the volume of a rectangular prism.

B. 11 dm D. 13 dm

LOOKING BACK TO YOUR LESSON

We have learned from the previous lesson, that the number of cubes is the volume of
the rectangular prism. We related length with rows, width with columns, and height with layers.
And to find the volume aside from counting the cubes, we multiplied the length by the width and
by the height. That, we derived with the formula as V= l x w x h.
Let’s find out if you still remember what you have learned.
Use the formula to find the volume of each prism. Write your answer in your notebook.

INTRODUCTION OF THE TOPIC

This module introduces the concepts of solving routine and non-routine problems that
will allow the learners to find the volume of rectangular prisms, solve routine and non-routine
problems, and apply the knowledge and skills they’ve learned.

Example 1:

A water container has a length of 15 dm, 7 dm width , and 20 dm height. How

much water do you think is needed to fill the container?

To answer the problem, we have to analyze and follow the steps.

STEPS ANSWER
Understand
1. Know what is asked in the The amount of water needed to fill
problem. the container

2. Know the given facts. L (Length) = 15 dm

W (Width) = 7 dm

3. Determine the operation or Multiplication:
formula to use. V= L x W x H
Solve
To get the Volume, multiply the
given facts.
V= L x W x H
4. Show the solution using the
15 dm x 7 dm x 20 dm
formula.
V= 2 100 dm3

answer.

What if, one of the facts in the problem

was not given?

Example 2:
Anthony was asked by her mother to fence a small garden at their backyard.
The garden already has soil having 17 500 dm3. Its length is 50 dm and the
width is 35 dm. What is its height?

STEP 1. UNDERSTAND
The height of the garden
What is asked?

Volume (V) is 17 500 dm3, length (L) is

What are the given facts? 50 dm and width (W) is 35 dm.

STEP 2. PLAN

What operation shall you Multiplication and Division

use?

STEP 3. SOLVE

Show the solution: 17 500dm3= 50 dm x 35 dm x __?

1. Multiply the given numbers (length by the width).

50 dm x 35 dm = 1 750 dm2

Page | 3
MATH 4 QUARTER 4 WEEK 4
2. Divide its product to the volume wherein the volume is the dividend, and the product
of the two given parts is the divisor.

10 dm

1 750 dm2 / 17 500 dm3

17 500
0

Therefore, the height is 10 dm

STEP 4. CHECK AND LOOK BACK

To check your answer, you multiply the length, the width and the height.

Example 3:

Diana bought a new black laptop. It measures 2415 cm3. Its length is 35 cm and the
height is 3 cm, what is its width?

STEP 1. UNDERSTAND

What is asked? The width of the new black laptop.

What are the given facts? Volume (V) is 2415 cm3, length (L) is
35 cm and its height is 3 cm.
STEP 2. PLAN

What operation shall Multiplication and Division

we use?

STEP 3. SOLVE

Show the solution: 2415 cm3= 35 cm x 3 cm x ___?

1. Multiply the given numbers (length by the height).

35 cm x3 cm = 105 cm2

2. Divide its product to the volume

Wherein the volume is the dividend, and the product of the two given parts is the
divisor. 23cm

105 cm2 2415 cm3

2415
0

MATH 4 QUARTER 4 WEEK 4
Therefore, the width is 23 cm

STEP 4. CHECK AND LOOK BACK

To check your answer, you multiply the length, the width and the height.

35 cm x 3 cm x 23 cm = 2415 cm3
