Assessment Brief
The aims of this assignment are to assess the following areas:

Demonstration of knowledge of key approaches in English Language Teaching and applied linguistics research
Critical evaluation of published literature in terms of research design, data collection, analysis and ethical issues
Development of a detailed and up-to-date literature review
Planning and carrying out a small-scale research project, with justifications for the approach and methods used
These aims are closely linked to the learning outcomes of this module.

A Research Proposal (100%): a 2,500 - 3,000 word research proposal. This can be on the same research topic
as your final dissertation. Your research proposal should cover the areas below:

Introduction/background (mandatory) (~100 words)


Literature review (mandatory) (~500 words)
Research gap (mandatory) (~100 words)
Research aims and research questions (mandatory) (~100 word)
Design/Methods and justification (mandatory) (~1000 words) - you should clearly specify why you have chosen a
specific design/methods, how this fits your contextual limitations, and how this relates to the methods used in
other studies in your area of interest. You could also discuss why you are not using specific methods. You
should evaluate the strengths and limitations of your chosen design and, where appropriate, demonstrate how
you are mitigating the limitations.
Data collection with justifications (mandatory) (~600 words)
Data analysis (optional) - specify how you intend to analyse your data, and the tools and/or theoretical
framework you intend to use.
Sample criteria and size (mandatory) - be as specific as possible and reference your data analysis as part of the
justification.

A presentation of your proposal at the MA Student Conference (this does not contribute to your grade, but is a
