Reading
The story of Concorde began when Britain worked with France in order to
develop a supersonic passenger jet. Both countries wanted to be the first to
develop this type of aircraft so they signed the Anglo-French Supersonic Aircraft
Agreement to build the Concorde. The Americans also tried to develop a similar
jet during the 1960s. However, people from environmental groups really didn’t
like the noise pollution, damage to the atmosphere and the cost of a project of
this type, which were very high. The U.S. Congress finally decided to stop giving
money for an American supersonic passenger jet in 1971.
By this time, the British and French had completed the Concorde but it was very
disappointing. In the 1960s, people thought that supersonic flying was the
future of commercial air-travel, nearly all the biggest airlines wanted to buy this
plane. There were orders for more than 270 of the jets, but high petrol costs
and problems with environmental group reduced the number of orders. The
Concorde was finally bought only by two airlines – Air France and British
Airways. The production of the plane ended in 1979 and only 16 Concordes
were ever made.
For nearly 25 years, the Concorde enjoyed lots of success and flew to such
destinations as Japan as well as offering a famous trip round the world in 1986,
which cost $20,800 per person. It could cross the Atlantic Ocean in about three
and a half hours, less than half the time of a regular aeroplane. The plane was
very popular with celebrities, sport stars and rich people.
Unfortunately, there was a terrible accident in which 113 people were killed.
This completely changed the success of Concorde. On 25 th July, 2000, an Air
France Concorde crashed in Gonesse, outside Paris, shortly after take-off and it
was discovered that this disaster was caused by technical problems. The
Concorde jets were immediately taken out of service and their future looked
uncertain. Concorde made its last flight on October 24th, 2004.
This was the end of the world’s most famous jet but maybe not the end of
supersonic airlines. It seems incredible but the Americans are now working on a
hypersonic project to design and build a jet that can fly at 4,800 mph (7680
kph)!
Only two European countries were involved in the project to build a supersonic
jet. T
