1. A topographic map has a contour interval of 0.30 m and a scale of 1:500. If two adjacent contours are
0.125 cm, apart, what is the average slope of the ground between the contours?

2. Using the rules of contours, list the contouring mistakes that are shown in the figure 1.

Figure 1

3. The areas within the contour line at the site of reservoir and the face of the proposed dam are as
follows: Determine the volume of water reserved at 88.5 m water surface level

Contour Area (m2)

81 500
82 6400
83 47600
84 73800
85 436250
86 680000

4. It is required to calculate the volume of earth excavated in quarry site. The entire area to be
excavated has been contoured and contours drawn at 1.5-m intervals. The area is going to be
excavated to a lowest point at a reduced level of 256.5 m above the datum, whilst the top of
the area has a reduced level of 262.5 m. The area enclosed by each contour line is shown in
the table below. Estimate the volume of quarry excavated.

Contour (m) Area enclosed (m2)

250 37800
251.5 33728
253 29830
254.5 26349
256 24781
257.5 22605
259 19310
260.5 14152
262 11070
263.5 6355
265 1874

Base your answers to questions 5 & 6 on the topographic map below. Points A, B, Y, and Z
are reference points on the topographic map. The symbol represents the highest
elevation on Aurora Hill.

5. Calculate the gradient between points Y and Z on the map, and label the answer with the
correct units.
6. On the grid, construct a topographic profile from point A to point B by following the
directions below.
a. Plot the elevation along line AB by marking with an X each point where a contour line is
crossed by line AB. Points A and B have been plotted for you.
b. Complete the profile by correctly connecting the plotted points with a smooth, curved
line.
