Introduction:

Lakshadweep, formerly Laccadive Islands, is a group of islands 400km off the Arabian Sea coast. Its name
means ‘one hundred thousand islands’ in Malayalam. It is India’s smallest union territory, covering 32 sq.

History:
Lakshadweep Islands’ history dates to ancient times when they were along maritime trade routes, attracting
traders from Egypt, Rome, Greece, and the Arab world. These traders brought Islam to the islands. The Arab
influence can be traced back to the 7th century. During the colonial era, the islands came under the control
of various powers including the Portuguese, Arakkal Kingdom, and British East India Company. After
India’s independence in 1947, Lakshadweep became a Union Territory and merged with the Indian Union in
1956. Development efforts have focused on infrastructure, healthcare, education, and transportation.
