1. As for me, I like “Mona Lisa” the most, because it’s more familiar to
me than the other ones. Also, I like the fact related to her eyes, that
she’s always looking at you in response.
2. “Self-Portrait with a Straw Hat” seems least attractive to me, because
the man looks sad and lost, but I don’t know the reason of this.
3. I like “The Starry Night” by van Gogh very much, because I like
watching night sky a lot myself, and this picture reminds me some
memories.
4. Talking about art in general, I prefer looking at photos more than at
paintings, because they’re much more connected to reality. And if you
like the scenery a lot, you might want to visit some particular place in
person.

“patronize” is to condescend or treat someone in a way that shows a

coffee shop, you are patronizing that establishment.
6. You're most likely to see a mirage in hot, desert-like environments
where the ground is very hot and there is a big temperature difference
between the ground and the air above it. This difference in
temperature causes light rays to bend, creating optical illusions that
appear as if there is water on the ground or objects where there are
none.

1. Having a “chequered past” means that someone has a history marked

by a series of good and bad experiences or choices. It signifies a
history that is dotted with both positive and negative events or actions.
So, it basically means that the person has had a mix of ups and downs
in their past.
2. When someone composes themselves, it means they are calming
down, controlling their emotions, and presenting themselves in a calm

related to the act of composing a painting, which refers to arranging
elements like color, form, and space in a harmonious way. However,
both expressions involve the idea of arranging or organizing
something, whether it's emotions or artistic elements, in a thoughtful
and deliberate manner.

7. Hey John,
I'm excited to tell you all about the experience I had today seeing the
portrait “Girl with a Pearl Earring” for the first time. It was painted by the
Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer.
The painting “Girl with a Pearl Earring” is mysterious about who the girl
actually is. Some people think she might have been a real person, while
others believe she could be a made-up character.
I was most impressed by how the girl's eyes and shiny pearl earring
captured my attention in the portrait. Vermeer's painting of her eyes feels
like they have many hidden stories. The simple and graceful way
everything is arranged adds to the painting's charm.
If I had to pick something I didn't quite like about the portrait, I would
say I wished I could learn more about the story behind the girl and the
significance of the pearl earring. I felt like there was so much more to
uncover.
Looking at the “Girl with a Pearl Earring” made me feel amazed and
curious. It feels like the girl in the picture wants you to enter her world
and reveal the secrets she has.
If I had to explain what the portrait looks like to someone who hasn't seen
it, I'd say it's like a painting of a young lady whose eyes appear to be
watching you from any direction you move. Fancy pearl earring she's
wearing makes the painting look very stylish and complete.
I can't wait for you to experience the beauty of this portrait yourself.
Sending you lots of love and excitement,
Sarah
