2.2 Case Study of Precedents

Objectives: This case study aims to investigate existing agricultural hubs, research, and
training center in the Philippines, with the other two precedents being foreign studies of
the same project to widen the viewpoints and approach of the research. It aims to evaluate
existing or related structures and research about the architectural characteristics and
features of an agriculture hub: the site, the structure, space planning, correlation of the
users, zones, spaces, and equipment, the circulation of daily occurrence within the area.
This research also aims to tackle existing problems and review the proposed
recommendations, and solutions.

A. Local Studies

Precedent #1: 'Agriculture Hub’ was established in Manaoag

Location: Barangay Cabanbanan, Manaoag, Pangasinan

The ‘Agriculture Hub’ is a facility established in Barangay Cabanbanan, in Manaoag with

the initiative of the Department of Agriculture and the Local Government Unit of
Pangasinan with the potential to aid the local farmers of Pangasinan in augmenting their
farm products and contribute to the country’s food security and alleviating the effects of
rising fuel prices and COVID19 pandemic. (Iñigo, 2022) The hub’s central focus is the
mechanized equipment that a farmer would need to boost and increase their production
value and quality, this includes mobile and recirculating batch dryers, processing
systems, solar drying pavement, and a warehouse.

Pangasinan constitutes 41.8% of total land area of region 1 and named third biggest
province in the whole Philippines. The climate and geophysical conditions are ideal for
the farming, crops, and fishing industries. The main goal of the facility is to help local
farmers to promote and boost the production of their farm products by providing types of

equipment for increased production and high-quality crops of Pangasinan. While the
agriculture hub was intended to serve local farmers in Manaoag which can help in the
processing and storing of their crops, its capacity is limited and won't be able to
accommodate the needs of the farmers. To further boost farming communities, a research
or training center can be provided to attract young people to agriculture and possible
investors to aid further development. Ultimately, sustainability must also be considered
since it houses mechanized farming equipment which is why maintenance and disaster
resilience aspects are important.

Precedent #2: Southern Mindanao Agricultural Research Center (SMARC)

Location: Kabacan, North Cotabato, Philipppines

Southern Mindanao Agricultural Research Center (SMARC) located in Kabacan, North

Cotabato was established in 1976 serves as the research arm of the University of
Mindanao occupying 300 of 1024 hectares of the university complex. The center was built
to aid the progress and development of the national research framework for Agriculture
and Natural Resources. The facility is mandated to research plantation crops which also
include vegetable, fruits, legumes, corn, and root. Ultimately, it is committed to
accommodate research, development, and educational activities in Mindanao. SMARC
also provides support to generate, innovate and develop relevant and modern
technologies in directive commodities both of regional and national significance with the
goal of enhancement and growth of the quality of life of Filipinos, particularly in Southern
Philippines.

B. International Studies

Precedent #3: Matthew Hillyard Agricultural Teaching and Research Center

Location: Utah, USA

The Matthew Hillyard Agricultural Teaching and Research Center is a 1904.5 sqm facility
of Utah State University for the College of Agriculture. Designed by Jacoby Architects,
this building is an integration of a veterinary clinic, classrooms, teaching, and animal
reproduction laboratories. The scale of students, teachers, farmers, researchers, and
animals brought about the form of the structure. The exterior feels like a modern-style
barn complimented by the agricultural setting of Cache Valley. Meanwhile, the interior
relishes an elegant cathedral-like ambiance that welcomes researchers, students,
teachers, and farmers. (Jacoby Architects, 2016)

Another striking feature is a 35-foot-tall central colonnade twisted 35 degrees from the
parallel of the building which joins two wings of the building providing views of the
mountains in the east and west.
Energy efficient strategies are also integrated within the building. The orientation of the
building takes advantage of natural lighting together with the prefabricated, R-valued
metal panel which envelopes the building providing steady skin to prevent cold bridging.
(Jacoby Architects, 2016) Furthermore, by exposing the building, infrastructure, and
industrial program functions within this building, the research facility becomes a balance
of form and function filled with natural light all throughout. (Jacoby Architects, 2016)
The facility shares both educational and actual practice with regards to agriculture which
makes the facility efficient and significant to the state of Utah. Bridging students,
educators, researchers, and local farmers fill in the gaps that needed for most research
centers and schools to ensure effective learning and application.

Precedent #3: The Hudson Valley Farm Hub

Location: Hurley, New York, USA

The Hudson Valley Farm Hub has been recently transformed from a sweet corn farm to
a diverse organic farm in Hurley, New York covering 1,600 acres of agricultural land. The
farm hub was established for diversified agricultural education boosting the regional food
economy, educating, or training young farmers, advancing research in agroecology, and

contributing to food security by providing fresh food to local communities. In 2017, Farm
Hub teamed up with MASS Design Group to establish a campus site plan that balances
immediate spatial needs with the long-term organizational vision. (MASS Design Group,
n.d.)

A new building (27,00 square feet) to house farm equipment and to accommodate office
and meeting spaces. With sustainability in mind, geothermal heating and cooling systems
were installed, and a roof-mounted solar array, an effective building envelope, recycled
materials, and environment-friendly glass were designed to lessen the possibility of bird
strikes. (GlasPro, n.d.) Ultimately, the collaboration of architecture and agriculture has led
to the development of a campus site plan that balances immediate spatial needs with the
long-term organizational vision.
