Grade 8 QUESTIONS ON FORCE, WORK ENERGY AND POWER ANSWERS

NAME:

1. In terms of energy, explain what is means to say a sound system is very powerful.

A LOT OF ENERGY/SOUND CAN BE GIVEN OUT IN A SHORT TIME. (2)

2. Draw an energy flow diagram to show the energy changes from sunshine on plants to you
running the 100 m.

SUN/SOLAR ENERGYPLANTS(PHOTOSYNTHESIS)/CHEMICAL ENERGY

FOODENERGY HUMANS (YOU/ME) CHEMICAL POTENTIAL ENERGY

CHEMICAL POTENTIAL HUMANS /(YOU/ME) RUNNING KINETIC ENERGY(RUNNING) (3)

3. Calculate the work done when a 200 N force moves an object 5 m in the direction of the force.

Work = Force x distance  = (200)x(5) = 1000 J  (3)

4. How high can a crane lift a 500 kg object if it uses 20 000 J of energy.

WORK DONE = ENERGY USED = Force x distance

SMALLEST FORCE NEED TO LIFT A 500kg object is its weight

weight = mass x 10 = 500 x10 = 5000N

distance = Energy/Force = 20 000/(5000) = 4m (4)

(if 20 000/500 = max 2 marks!)

5. How long does it take a 100 W light bulb to convert 2400 J of energy from electricity to light?

Power = Work/time or time = Work/power  (either formula)

100 = 2400/t .: t= 2400/100 = 24 s  (3)

6. How long does it take a 1000 W winch to lift a 80 kg object 40 m off the ground?

minimum force needed = weight = massx10 = 80x10 = 800N 

Work = Force x distance .: w = 800 x 40  = 32000 J

Power=Work/time  1000 = 32000/t  .: t = 32000/1000 = 32s  (5)
