Materials:

Size F/5-3.75 mm crochet hook

Medium weight yarn (4) - 147 yards/135 m

This pattern is worked from the middle of the shirt (the


body of the butterfly) and then the wings of the butterfly
are added to the body.

Butterfly Body - middle of top:


ch 4

Row 1: 3 dc in 1st st - (4 dc total including 3 ch)

Row 2: ch 3, turn, 3 dc skipping first st (last dc is worked


in top of ch 3) - (4 dc total including 3 ch)

Row 3: repeat row 2

Row 4: ch 3, turn, dc in first st, 2 dc, inc dc in last st - (6 dc


total)

Row 5: repeat row 4 - (8 dc total)

Row 6: turn, slst into 2nd st, ch 3, 5 dc in next sts. - (6 dc


total)
There should be a stitch at the end that has no dc in it.

Row 7: ch 3, turn, 5 dc - (6 dc total)

Row 8: ch 100. This will be half of the neck strap. You can
increase the stitch count if needed. Fasten off. You can
weave in the end, but I usually just leave it.

Row 9: ch 100 (or the same amount of chains done for the
other side of the neck), slst in top right side of butterfly

body (top of ch 3 st). Fasten off. Weave in end(s).

Butterfly Wings (x2):

Attach yarn to top of 5th row of the butterfly body to the st


with no dc (see picture for details)

Row 1: ch 5, dc in same st yarn was attached, ch 5, dc


between body row 4 & 5, ch 2, dc in same st, ch 3, dc
between body row 3 & 4, ch 2, dc in same st (see picture
for details)

Row 2: ch 3, turn, *3 dc in first ch space, ch*, repeat


between ** 2 more times, 5 dc in next ch space, ch, 4 dc in
last ch space (I put the 4th dc in the top of the ch 3 st, but
not needed) - (19 dc total)

Row 3: turn, slst in 2nd st, slst in 3rd st, ch 3, dc in same


st, inc dc in next st (4 dc), ch 2, sk ch space, inc dc in next
5 sts (10 dc), ch 2, sk ch space, sk first st, 3 dc in middle st
(3 dc), ch 2, sk last st, sk ch space, inc dc in next 3 sts (6
dc), ch 2, sk ch space, inc dc in next 2 sts leaving last two
sts unworked - (27 dc total)

Row 4: turn, slst in 2nd st, slst in 3rd st, ch 3, dc in same


st, inc dc in next st (4 dc), ch 2, sk ch space, *inc dc, dc*,
repeat ** 2 more times (9 dc), ch 2, sk ch space, sk first st,
3 dc in middle st (3 dc), ch 2, sk ch space, *inc dc, dc*,
repeat ** 4 more times (15 dc), ch 2, inc dc 2 times - (35 dc
total)

Row 5: turn, slst in 2nd st, slst in 3rd st, ch 3, dc in same


st, inc dc in next st (4 dc), ch 2, sk ch space, inc dc in first
st, dc across until one st left before ch space, inc dc (17
dc), ch 2, sk ch space, 3 dc in middle st (3 dc), ch 2, sk ch
space, inc dc in first st, dc across until one st left before
ch space, inc dc (11 dc), ch 2, sk ch space, inc dc 2 times
(4 dc) - (39 dc total)

At this point was when I changed colors on the purple top.


You can choose to switch or continue with the same color.
Row 6: repeat row 5 - (43 dc total)

Splitting Upper and Lower Wing:

Upper Wing:

Row 7: turn, slst in 2nd st, slst in 3rd st, ch 3, dc in same


st, inc dc in next st (4 dc), ch 2, sk ch space, inc dc in first
st, dc across until one st left before ch space, inc dc (21
dc), ch 2, sk ch space, 3 dc in first st - (28 dc total)

Row 8: turn, slst in 2nd st, ch 3, dc in same st, inc dc in


next st (4 dc), ch 2, sk ch space, inc dc in first st, dc
across until one st left before ch space, inc dc (23 dc), ch
2, sk ch space, ch 2, sk ch space, inc dc 2 times (4 dc) -
(31 dc total)

Row 9: turn, slst in 2nd st, slst in 3rd st, ch 3, dc in same


st, inc dc in next st (4 dc), ch 2, sk ch space, inc dc in first
st, dc across until one st left before ch space, inc dc, ch 2,
sk ch space, inc dc 2 times (4 dc)

Row 10-11: repeat row 9 - (37 dc total on row 11)

Row 12: turn, slst 3 times, slst in ch space, slst 2 more


times (now in second st after first ch space), ch 3, dc
across until one st remaining before ch space, inc dc (29
dc), ch 2, sk ch space, inc dc 2 times (4 dc) - (33 dc total)

Row 13: turn, slst in 2nd st, slst in 3rd st, ch 3, dc in same
st, inc dc in next st (4 dc), ch 2, sk ch space, inc dc in first
st, dc across until 5 sts remain (including top of 3 ch)

Row 14: turn, slst into next 5 sts, ch 3, dc across till one st
remains before ch space, inc dc, ch 2, sk ch space, inc dc
2 times (4 dc)

Continue alternating rows 13 and 14 until you have 18


rows in total, or 9 dc total

Row 19: ch 3, turn, 3 dc - (4 dc total)

Row 20: turn, slst 3 times, ch 250 (this will be one of the
strands that will cross in the back. Fasten off. You can
weave in the end, but I usually just leave it.

Lower Wing:

Attach yarn to left dc stitch of 3 dc couple of row 6. See


picture for details.

Row 7: ch 3, dc twice in same st (3 dc), ch 2, sk ch space,


dc across to ch space (13 dc), ch 2, sk ch space, inc dc
twice (4 dc) - (20 dc total)

Row 8: turn, slst in 2nd st, slst in 3rd st, ch 3, dc in same


st, inc dc in next st (4 dc), ch 2, sk ch space, sk first dc st,
dc across until one st left before ch space, ch 2, sk last st,
sk ch space, inc dc twice - (19 dc total)

Repeat row 8 until only one dc st is left in the middle of the


two ch spaces, or row 13.

Row 14: turn, slst in 2nd st, slst in 3rd st, ch 3, dc in same
st, inc dc in next st (4 dc), ch, sk ch space, sk dc st, sk ch
space, inc dc twice (4 dc) - (8 dc total)

Row 15: turn, slst 3 times, ch 3, dc in same st, ch, sk ch


space, inc dc in next st - (4 dc total)

Fasten off.
Repeat Butterfly Wing on the other side of the butterfly's
body and then weave in all ends.

If you want more coverage, you can sew the top and
bottom of the butterfly's body onto the upper and lower
wing. See the photo for details.

The bottom of the body would sew onto somewhere on the


lower wings, as shown in the photos.

The Straps:

The straps that are ch 100 that are attached to the body
will tie around your neck.

The straps that are ch 250 first cross over the back and
are put in the top butterfly wing's farthest opening hole.
Then they cross over again to the lower

butterfly wing's farthest opening hole. Then the two


strands are tied together.
