IV. PROCEDURE

A. Recall
Solve for x in each of the following numbers below and check:
1. x2 = 144
2. x-3 = 36
3. x-6 = 0
4. x2-9x+18 = 0

B. Motivation:
Group the equations inside the box under group A and group B. Decide how
are these equations can be grouped according to their types.

x2 = 144 √x+2 = 2
4 + √x-2 = x x2-9x+18 = 0
x-3 = 36 √x = 12

Last meeting I ask you to bring pictures of Philippines’ festival.

Would you like to show it to the class?
In your MAPEH subject you will be discussing different festival dances-in the Philippines in your first
week of quarter 3, and also when you were in grade 7, you have learned about different religious
festivals.
What is one of the purposes of celebrating festivals?
Today in the study of our new lesson, we will learn together with it the different festivals in the
province of Cavite.

Mathematical Concept:

Radical Equations are equations containing radicals with variables in the radicand.

To solve for the value of the variable in the radical equation, here are the steps to follow:
1. Isolate the radical on the left side by applying the appropriate properties of equality.
2. Combine similar terms when possible.
3. Remove the radical sign by raising both sides of the equation to the index of the radical.
4. Solve of the resulting equation.
5. Check the solutions for a possible presence of extraneous roots.

Extraneous solution is a solution that does not satisfy the given equation.
So let us begin by doing the following Activity.

1.Activity

Form your group (there are 4groups in the class), get activity sheet one at a time. After
answering one, you can get another to answer. If you cannot answer the problem, you may return
the activity sheet to your teacher for the other group to steal and answer.
The group with much numbers with answers may win.

Grateful Cavitenyos!
To reveal how Cavitenyos show their gratefulness, solve the following radical
equation then fill up the puzzle with the letter that corresponds to the correct answer. Complete
solution.

Answer Key:
1. Wagayway Festival 1- A
2. Sapyaw Festival 2- S
3. Pahimis Festival 3- I
4. Paru-paru Festival 4- P
5. Maytinis Festival 5- R
6. Regada Festival 6- Y
7. Sumilang Festival

2.Analysis

Answer the following questions:

1).How did you find that activity?

2).Did you have any difficulty in answering activity?

3).What different concepts/process/methods in mathematics you have used in

solving the problem?

√4x-3 + 5 = 2 radical equation

Isolate the radical on the left side by applying the
√4x-3 = 2 - __ appropriate properties of equality.
(√4x-3) = (____) square both side
4x-3 = _____ Solve of the resulting equation.

√4(__)-3 + 5 = 2 Check the solutions for a possible presence of extraneous

roots
3. Abstraction
1). How can we determine the radical equation? How it is defined?

2). What is an extraneous solution?

3). What are the steps in solving rational equation?

4). Are you grateful of radicals in your life? Why do you think we should be grateful
of radicals?

4. Application

e.g. Solve and check:

1. √x = 12
(√x)2 = (12)2. Square both sides
x = ____
Check: √x = 12
√144 = 12
___ = 12
The solution is ___.

2. √x-3 = 6
(√x-3) = 6 Square both sides
x-3 = __ Simplify
x = __
Check: √x-3 = 6
√___ -3 = 6
√ =6
___ = 6
The solution is ____.

3. 4+√x-2 = x
√x-2 = x - ____ Isolate, radical expression.
(√x-2) = (x-__) Square, both sides.
x-2 = x2-__+__ Expand the right side.
x -__+__ = 0
2
factor the trinomial.
x = __ / x = __

Check: if x=3, If x=__

4+√x-2 = x 4+√x-2 = x
4+√3-2 = 3 4+√__-2 = __
4+√__ = 3 4+√__ = __
4+__ = 3 4+__ = __
___ ≠3 __ = __

Extraneous solution: ____

Only solution: ____

5. Evaluation

1. √x=7
a. 7 b. 14 c. 49 d. 70

2. √x + 5 = 11
a. 36 b. 116 c. 121 d. 6

3. √5x+1 = 6
a. 7 b. 1 c. 36 d. 6

4. What is the result when we square both side of √x = √6x-15

a. x=6x-15 b. 5x=-15 c. 7x=-15 d. x2=6x-15

5. What is the result when we square both side of 2√x-1 = √3x+4
