SPECIFICATION ASSISTANT

ML LOOP (SINGLE)

See the most common specification wording first, with explanations for possible modifications
referenced by number.

BRAIDED FLEXIBLE EXPANSION LOOPS (1)

Braided flexible expansion loops shall consist of two parallel sections of braided metal hose, a 180
degree return bend, with inlet and outlet 90 degree elbow connections. The loops shall be
engineered to move in all three planes, and shall impart no thrust loads to system anchors (2).

Materials of construction of the braided metal hoses are to be a type 321 stainless steel with a type
304 stainless steel braid. End fittings (3) shall be consistent with pipe material and connection
fittings.

Loops shall be designed to meet the design pressure, temperature, and movement requirements
for the system (4). Loops shall be capable of accommodating piping system and equipment
movements and vibration as needed (5).

Loops shall be furnished with factory supplied hanger / support lug located at the bottom of the
180 degree return. Also provided at the bottom return will be a plugged FPT to be used for a drain
or air release vent (6).

Braided flexible expansion loops shall be Flexicraft Industries, ML Loop.

Explanations for Possible Alternatives

Modify the above wording for specific applications, after reading the below points referenced above.

(1) This type of product is sometimes referred to with different terms, but “Braided Flexible Expansion Loop” is
considered the most descriptive.
(2) The braiding absorbs the large pressure thrust load that is typically transmitted to the pipe anchors with the use of
standard expansion joints. The anchors may include equipment nozzles that have limited load capacity.
(3) Specific end fittings may be described if wanted, usually certain flanges such as carbon steel ANSI B16.5 150# plate
flanges. Weld ends and grooved ends are also common, as are stainless steel materials.
(4) Specific pressures can be listed, but care should be taken as pressure ratings can vary by diameter and system design.
Double braiding is required for all steam applications.
(5) Specifically desired movements are often specified, usually in the axial and lateral directions. Standard loops have +/-
1.5” or +/- 4” movements in all three directions, but specials are available for more movement if needed. Movements
for seismic applications may be listed specifically. If insulation is to be added, the amount should be listed to ensure it
does not interfere with required compression movements. ML Loops may also be nested for parallel lines to require
less space.
(6) To specify specifically for 1” – 6” loops, use 3/8” FPT, and for 8” and larger, use ½”.
