Review I optional

There will be a set of bonus questions on the midterm exam similar to these optional sets.

Again, find the general equation to answer each question.

1. Suppose you drive 15miles to the grocery store at an average speed of 30mph but when you get
there, you realize you left your money at home. If there is more traffic on the way back and you
only travel at an average speed of 20mph, what is your average speed for the whole trip?

2. A bullet with a length of 2cm is fired through a wood board 10cm thick. If the bullet strikes
the board with a velocity of 420m/s and exits the board at a velocity of 280 m/s, what is the
number of boards it would take to stop the bullet completely?

3. A rocket is fired vertically upward at 80m/s and accelerates at a rate of 4m/s 2 until it reaches an
altitude of 1000m. The engine then shuts off. What are (a) the total amount of time the rocket
will be in the air before it crashes to the ground (b) the maximum altitude it will reach (c) the
velocity it will hit the ground at on return?

4. A ball is thrown downward at a velocity of –12m/s from the top of a 25m building. At the
same time, a man on the ground, 31m away from the building, runs to catch it. What must the
average velocity of the man be to catch the ball?

5. A potted plant falls from a ledge 53m above the ground. When it is 14m above the ground, a
man 2m tall looks up and sees the plant is headed straight for him. How much time does he have
to get out of the way?

6. A car is traveling at a velocity of 12m/s when the driver sees the traffic light turn red. If the
driver has a reaction time of 0.51s before he hits the brakes and the car can decelerate at –6.2
m/s2, how far will he travel before he comes to a rest?

7. A racecar leaves the pit area accelerating at a rate of 4m/s 2. After four seconds pass, it enters
the main raceway and is passed by a second car traveling at 70 m/s. If the first car maintains a
constant acceleration, how much time will it take to catch the second car?

8. If a basketball player has a vertical leap of 95cm, how much time does it take for him to go
from ground level to 15cm above the ground? How much time does it take for him to go from
80cm to 95cm above the ground?

9. A stone is thrown from the ground upwards at a velocity of 25m/s. At the same instant,
another stone is dropped from a height of 15m. At what time will the two stones be at the same
height above the ground?

10. A hot air balloon rises at a constant velocity of 7m/s. When it is 12m above the ground,
someone fires a pellet gun directly up at it at a velocity of 30m/s. If the pellet just misses the
balloon and passes it, at what heights will their altitudes be the same? At what times?

11. A stone is dropped from a cliff and falls the last half of the height in a time of three seconds.
What are the height of the cliff and the total time of the descent?

12. A first stone is dropped from the roof of a building. Two seconds after that, a second stone is
thrown straight down with an initial speed of 30 m/s. It is observed that the two stones strike the
ground at the same time. How long does it take the first stone to reach the ground? How high is
the building? What are the speeds of the two stones just before they hit?
