Our Eastern B-C Hosts

The Scotties are coming off a fairly fine weekend in
wrapping up their regular season at the Class B-C
East/West Challenge in Cut Bank, winning a pair,
losing one and their final game ending up in a tie. On
Friday, the Scotties lost to Conrad/Choteau 15-2. But
they would bounce back with some great at-bats to
whip up on Troy 16-1 in 4 innings. Saturday had the
Scotties beating MAC (Mission-Arlee-Charlo) 12-6.
Their final game ended in a 4-4 tie with Eureka. The
Scotties will enter the MHSA Eastern B-C Divisional
with a 10-11-1 overall record which gets underway
this Thursday at Sullivan Park. They play Anaconda

Montana Is DEAD LAST In
Average Starting Teacher Salary
A new teacher salary report shows Montana last in
the nation in starting teacher salary and 42nd when it
comes to average teacher salary.
The National Education Association is reporting
that the average starting teacher wage in Montana
is $34,476 while the average salary for a teacher in
Montana is $55,509 which ranks 42nd.
Nationwide, the average starting salary for a
teacher is $44,530 and the average salary for an educator
is $69,544.
The starting salary for a teacher in Glasgow is
$35,662 and the average salary is $53,571 according to
the Montana School Boards Association.
Even with record-level increases in some states,
average teacher pay has failed to keep up with inflation
over the past decade. Adjusted for inflation, on average,
teachers are making 5% less than they did 10 years ago.
At 3.9%, the increase in the average starting salary
was the largest in the 14 years that NEA has been
tracking teacher salary benchmarks. However, when
adjusted for inflation, the starting teacher salaries are
now $4,273 below the 2008-2009 levels.

Every student started
by researching boat
designs and finally coming
up with a couple they
like. Next, students began
building a prototype, a
small scale version, in
which they built out of
paper folders. These must Using cardboard, duck tape, painters caulk & water based polyurethane to build,

build a cardboard boat to a large scale in which it will
then be compared to the prototype and they are graded
accordingly.
Some of the other concepts that are then covered
are how to calculate volume of the boats, volume of
displaced water, depth boat was in the water, strength
ratios and approximately how much weight could the
boat hold before it sinks. Its quite surprising how much
they can. It’s great the Cottonwood allows us to do this
as using a pond this time a year would be a bit chilly.

Letter to the Buzz
Free Tree Day
I would like to thank the businesses and community
members who donated to Free Tree Day this year and
for the past 17 years. It occurred to me that perhaps a
little history of the event would be appreciated by those
who don’t know how it all started and how it has grown.
Free Tree Day is the brainchild of former
County Commissioner Dave Pippin who thought our
community should have more trees. In the first year,
Dave bought the trees with his own money and handed
them out by himself. In the following few years Dave
continued to do all the fundraising, purchasing of trees,
and handing them out himself.
In 2010, when I was hired on to MSU Extension
in Valley County, I offered to help him source climate
appropriate shrubs and trees and provide education on
the species being offered and planting instructions. The
program steadily grew and through the generosity of
this community we were able to increase our offering
from a few hundred trees to an average of 1100 per year.
With this increase in service, we needed more
volunteers to help with setting up, dispensing the trees,
and cleaning up afterward. The Gumbo Gals Gardening
Club graciously offered to help with the fundraising
and distribution of the trees. The Valley County
Commissioners offered their maintenance people, and
paid for the peat moss, bags, and water that we use to
ensure the bare root trees remain as fresh as possible
after being given away, until they are planted.
We chose bareroot 2-year-old trees and shrubs
because they are easier to plant and quicker to become
established than larger and potted trees. They also
are substantially less expensive than potted trees. All
was going spectacularly well until the Conservation
Seedling Nursery in Missoula decided to stop offering
bare root trees and shrubs in 2022. When the pandemic
struck, the nursery was hit hard with a loss of critical
labor to help with their production and had to cut back.
The bareroot production was the most labor intensive
and least profitable so they cut it. At triple the price
or more, the containerized trees were cost prohibitive,
and we were forced to stop holding Free Tree Day after
2022. We feared that was the end of a highly successful
community project and important conservation
program.
In visiting with Madelyn House of Prairie House
Gardens in late 2023, I mentioned my dismay at the loss
of the program because we couldn’t source bareroot
trees. To my surprise, she reached out to me on January
16, 2024, to let me know she had found a source. The
prices were a bit higher, but not as expensive as the
containerized trees from the conservation nursery. She
mentioned that we would also have shipping costs. I
asked her to order 1000 trees – 200 each of common
lilac, Ohio Buckeye, and Horse Chestnut and 100 each
of Villosa lilac, golden currant and saskatoon berry. You
cannot imagine the joy that we all felt at the thought of
being able to offer our event again.
Finally, the first week of May the trees arrived, and
I met with Madelyn to pick them up. Prairie House
Gardens donated the shipping costs which were almost
$200. Unfortunately, because our order was so late in
the season, the nursery was unable to fill the order for
the horse chestnut and Ohio buckeye trees, reducing
our 1,000-tree offering to just 600. Regardless we forged
on, and our incredible team came together to put on
the event with happiness in our hearts. These volunteers
stayed late on Thursday night to set up the tent and
prepare the items needed for the program, then arrived
on Friday morning between 6:00 and 6:30 a.m. Many of
the Gumbo Gals volunteers drove between 25 and 50
miles to be there by that time.
I tell you all this, so that you too can have pride
in the generous community that we live in. You all are
a part of something greater than yourself and I am so
very grateful to live in such a kind, loving, and generous
community. Since its inception, the community has
received a staggering 23,600 trees - all from donations.
