Warrior of Purgatory
“Rend! Slaughter! Devour your enemies! There is no other way to
survive. You cannot escape your hunger, Warriors of Purgatory…”

In a �me without Law or Chaos, where the only rule is the merging of tribes through
the death of their leader, there came a great upheaval. Where once soldiers made
war with firearms and blades, tac�cs and cold logical analysis, there was now rage,
jealousy, fear, love, and pain. Humans marked with strange emo�on are equally
marked with a ta�oo of unknown origin — and the power of the Atma that births
forms of great demonic power for their wielders.

❖ Atma Avatar: A Warrior of Purgatory doesn’t possess a Persona as others might,


instead trading it for the emotion- and hunger-fuelled power of Atma. As a natural
reflex in combat (but not when caught unawares), a Warrior of Purgatory transforms
into their demonic Avatar. While in this form, they lose the benefits of weapons and
the DR of any armour they have equipped, and gain the following effects:
❖ A natural weapon of bone or other material sprouts from their demonic body. It
is considered a Reach 1 melee weapon that deals STRd6 Physical damage,
counts as a single chosen Weapon Class (or the consumed Weapon’s Class,
Warrior’s choice) for Feats or other abilities and has one of the following, chosen
only at character creation: Reach 1-3, Piercing 2, +1 SKL, or Critical SKL.
Outside of combat, a Warrior may permanently consume 1 weapon and replace
their Hunt Weapon’s Damage, Reach, or Effect with that of the weapon. If
another weapon is consumed, any other attributes are reverted to their default
state. Special weapons consumed this way are returned upon being replaced.
At level 10, a Warrior upgrades their default Hunt Weapon effect to one of the
following, based on what was picked at character creation: Reach 1-4, Piercing
3, +2 SKL, or Critical 3*SKL.
❖ Naturally tough skin and bony scales cover them, granting them VIT*(Level / 4
(rounded up)) DR. Starting from level 8, they also become Null to their
chosen Resistance.
❖ Can cast spells from their spell deck as normal, including the ability to
cast Devour at the cost of 1 Energy.
❖ May switch between Atma Avatar form and human form as a Default
Action. Effects that affect Persona switching instead affect Transformation.
❖ Cannot negotiate with enemies, due to their hunger for Atma.
❖ Atma Affinities: Warriors of Purgatory may only pick two Types for their
Atma Avatar, may not sacrifice Types to gain Avatar levels, and level at the
same rate as their Avatar. In Human form, they are unaffected by their
chosen affinities. A Warrior also cannot use Spell Cards or gain Personas of
any kind (including Ultimates and Icons), but may negotiate in Human
form to gain items or money instead.
❖ Demon’s Hunger: Instead of gaining starting SP or SP per level, a
Warrior can only gain SP in the following ways: A Warrior gains SP
equal to half their highest Social Tier at the end of each combat.
Slaying an enemy with a Hunt spell grants them SP equal to half
the enemy’s level.
❖ Mantra: Warriors of Purgatory cannot spend SP on individual
spells, instead purchasing Mantras. They have a Spell Deck
limit of 10 Spells maximum, but aren’t restricted to
spells of their chosen types. Warriors of Purgatory
begin with two Beginner (1-Star) Mantras
containing spells of their Types.

Spells and Statuses
Warriors of Purgatory gain the ability to choose the Hunt type as one of their Atma Avatar types.
After successfully slaying a target with a Hunt spell, the Warrior has a 25–5VIT% (minimum 5%)
chance of being afflicted by the Stomach Ache status. For each additional target slain in a single battle
with a Hunt spell, add 10% to the chance. Resets upon being afflicted by Stomach Ache, whether cured
or not afterwards.
Using the Atma Avatar also opens up additional tactical advantages when exploiting weaknesses.
Upon striking a Shadow or Demon’s Weakness, they must resist Fearful Chance: 50%. For each
additional time they are struck by their Weakness without being Fearful, increase the chance by 10%.
Stomach Ache is a Nervous status which quarters the amount of SP gained when slaying targets
with Hunt spells and inflicts -1 HDC on Hunt spells until it is cured.

Mantras
Mantras are pre-selected sets of spells that must be bought with SP at special locations known as
Karma Terminals. Spells acquired via Mantras may then be individually placed into a Warrior’s spell
deck at any time outside of combat. Any spells put into the deck have no free uses until you properly
rest, but you can cast them using Energy as normal, or spend resources to restore uses to them.
To start with, a Mantra costs an amount of SP equal to its Star Rating. SP can then be further
invested into a Mantra to increase the available uses of the spells packaged within for the same SP cost
as it was purchased for. Additionally, once a Mantra has been acquired, it allows
access to the next one in the tree. For example: Acquiring the 1-Star Ice Spirit Mantra Trees can be

Rulebook (pg. 40-41), but the individual spells within cannot, and any Mantras that require a refunded
Mantra are also refunded.
Some packaged spells may be marked with a *; this indicates a spell is from a different source than
this Supplement or the Core / Sea of Souls Grimoire content. Spells marked in this way are optional to
include, and if any Mantras consist entirely of those spells, they are free to be removed if you do not use
the necessary Heartverse content. Any spells included this way will have their respective sources noted
below for credit.

Karma Terminals
Karma Terminals are ornately designed golden shrines possessing vast amounts of karmic power.
From here, a Warrior of Purgatory may spend their SP on Mantras taught by the Karma Terminal,
offering up their Atma to it in exchange for this great power. Anyone may also spend time to rest here
safely, as well as teleport from one Terminal to another, so long as the respective Terminals are
operational.
When within 5 meters of a Karma Terminal, both Persona User and Warrior of Purgatory alike can
sense its presence, allowing easier navigation towards it.
If using Macca, resting at a Terminal costs 1 Macca per HP and Energy restored (the Macca goes
toward keeping your local Terminal clean and functional!)

The Press-Turn System
The Press-Turn System is an alternative combat initiative system that rewards careful organisation
and tactical exploitation of enemy weaknesses. It can be harder for parties without a focus on
optimisation, however, and should only be used with the understanding that the group desires a more
difficult, punishing system similar to the Shin Megami Tensei video games instead of the Persona
games.

Initiative
In the Press-Turn System, combat starts as normal — each character rolls for initiative. However,
instead of each character acting on their own initiative as it appears, each team of characters is grouped
together and arranged by the order their initiative goes. The team with the highest initiative goes first,
with the character that has the highest initiative, then the second-highest, and so on, repeating until the
team has run out of Icons.

Icons
Icons are shorthand for the amount of actions a single team gets. At the beginning of a team’s turn,
they receive a number of Icons equal to the number of active (as in actively participating in combat and
not unconscious) characters on that team. That means a team with 5 characters will receive 5 full Icons
to work with, while a team with only 2 will only receive 2 full Icons.
❖ Each character can move up to their full Movement, splitting it between their actions if
they wish, and can make 1 Interrupt action each
round, without spending Icons.
❖ Using a Default action spends 1 Full Icon.
❖ Using a Quick action replaces a Full Icon with a Bonus
Icon.
❖ Characters may Pass their turn as a Quick action.
❖ Both Full and Bonus Icons can be spent on either action.
After using either a Default or Quick action, the turn passes to the next character in the team.
There is also a chance to lose Icons for making tactical missteps, but equally the chance to gain extra
Icons for being tactically proficient. The biggest example of this is striking Weaknesses or Resistances.
❖ Striking a Weakness or landing a Critical Hit replaces the Icon spent on the attack into a
Bonus Icon. If the Icon spent is already a Bonus Icon, no further Icons are granted.
❖ When Icons are lost or spent, Bonus Icons are always used first.
❖ Bonus Icons can only be spent on a single Default or Quick action before being used
up completely.
❖ Striking a Null / Reflect / Drain element causes the attacking team to lose 2 Full / Bonus
Icons, including the one spent on the attack.
Once all characters on a team have used their Icons, the turn shifts to the highest initiative on the
opposing team, and the process starts again. When all teams have used all their Icons, it becomes a new
Round and you repeat the cycle until combat ends, through either
Null / Re�lect / Drain negotiation, surrender, or the destruction of all opposing teams.

In the ruined world of the Junkyard and other such devastated societies, the usual currencies of the
Yen, the Dollar, or the Euro no longer exist — their economic backing having been lost to time and the
world’s destruction. In their place is a singular currency obtained by defeating Demons, completing
tasks, and doing your part in this new society.

Macca
Macca (or ћ) is the standard currency used in the Shin Megami Tensei series, and is the official
currency used in the Expanse, minted by Lucifuge. It was primarily used for demons to barter with one
another — but the downfall of human civilisation in favour of a largely demon-controlled society has
made the currency spread beyond just demons, and has become widespread among humans as well.
As a general guideline, RP converts to Macca at a rate of 0.01 RP to 20ћ (1 RP = 2,000ћ), based
on the price of a Molotov Cocktail and other similar consumables. However, if this proves too much —
or too little — the more granular use of Macca should allow the GM to make finer adjustments if
necessary to ensure that the Macca always flows where it should.

Earning and Spending


As a commonly used and traded currency, Macca is
significantly easier to get a hold of in a place where combat is
frequent, and the duties of a citizen in society’s sanctuaries are
many. Though you may use the usual working blocks from
the Grimoire of the Heart Core book and convert the The minted coin and more portable paper note

The first of these methods is through combat against currency.
Demons. Being more materialistic sorts, demons usually
carry some form of the currency on them — and thus by the laws of Survival of the Fittest, if you can
trash a demon, you earn the right to their cash too. When you are victorious in battle, you earn an
amount of Macca equal to the sum of all Demons’ levels * 100.
For example, if you fought a swarm of five Level 3 demons, you would earn a total of 1,500ћ for
defeating them all, not including any money earned from negotiations. Any Macca earned this way
must be divided amongst the players in the group, rather than granting the total to all players.
The second method, albeit a longer, more drawn out process, is completing tasks or challenges.
This is largely up to the Narrator to create some quests or jobs for the players to complete, but some
examples are listed below.
But Macca isn’t just for hoarding — Demons may also demand Macca as part of negotiations.
When you fail a demon negotiation check, as long as it didn’t result in a negative Tier, you may try
again after paying an amount of Macca or handing over items with a value equal to X*100, where X is
the Level of the demon.

Strange valuables born from the aberrations in Solar activity, these Solar Cells are desired by the
Karma Temple and merchants for the data and energy potential they contain. Solar Cells can be rarely
found in the belongings of certain individuals — including Demons — and have different trade values
depending on their rarity, as displayed below. All drop chances are rolled at the end of a combat, rolling
once for each applicable demon that was defeated in that combat.

gods such as Indra, Agni, and Usas. She was at the centre of the creation myth
during this time, and was considered an incredibly important goddess.

Gale is Embryon’s master tactician, and yet remained so long after the events of Ground Zero. Even
as his emotions started to spring forth, he kept a cool and logical head,
preferring the rational methods of science to more emotional and rash
decisions.

is chief of the five deities of life, being in charge of breathing, and it is said that he won a
contest of importance when the deities controlling the senses of mankind realised they
could only function when empowered by Vayu.

Cielo is a cheerful and foolish man who eases the tensions of Embryon’s main group
and has a friendly rivalry with Gale due to his antics. He’s loyal to those he calls
his friends, and never calls someone a friend if he doesn’t mean it.

that Indra grabbed his foot and pulled him out of the sky, where he fell to his death.
