TECHNICAL DOCUMENTATION PSH 150

2 Introduction
The inspection and maintenance procedure is based on API – Recommended practice and
Blohm+Voss Oil Tools experience in the design of slips.

This recommended practice outlines are procedures for methods of inspection and
maintenance of Power Slips to prevent injury to personnel and irreparable damage to
equipment.

This technical documentation contains instructions of safety, installation, operation and

maintenance for the PSH 150.
Throughout the documentation, the abbreviation PSH – F is used occasionally for the
designation of the Power Slip with Feedback.

In the event of problems, which cannot be solved with the aid of this manual, please contact
one of the addresses list at the end of this documentation.
The Blohm+Voss Type PSH 150 hydraulic operated Power Slip is designed for enhanced
safety by eliminating personnel on the Rig floor, when operations are required the use of
slips.

The PSH 150 can be operated by using a Control Unit at a safe distance from the Rotary
Table. In case of a loss of hydraulic pressure, a safety device is installed to prevent the lifting
arm from engaging. The Power Slip accommodates B+V Standard ( Rotary ) Slips in the
range of 2 3/8” to 7”, as well as most other brands.

4.2 Hydraulic System

4.2.1 Venting

At the beginning of work wear your personnel protection equipment. Especially leak oil under
pressure can cause severe personnel injury to the eyes (use eye protection).

The hydraulic system of delivered Power Slip is vented. Be aware that the hydraulic
connection hoses (A,B and C) should be vented before connecting it to the power slip.

If air has collected in the system, it can be discharged with the aid of the fittings near the
couplings.

4.2.2 Connect the PSH with Hydraulic Supply

The PSH-150 hydraulic operated must be connected with the hydraulic supply by couplings
(see Fig. 14). The connection “C” is only available for the PSH-150 with Feedback.
Information on the end positions of the jib is transmitted to the “Control unit” through the
built-in 2-way valves.

4.2.5 Hydraulic valve for Feedback

The PSH-F 150 is also equipped with two feedback valves (only 88210-H-F).
Depending on the position of the jib, these valves pass a volume flow to the control unit
which is then converted into a signal for the operator.

15
TECHNICAL DOCUMENTATION PSH 150

4.2.6 Hydraulic valve settings and adjustment

The hydraulic system of the PSH-150 hydraulic operated is tested and delivered fully
functional with the specified hydraulic power requirements.

In case during the commissioning no function or incomplete function occurs the following
hydraulic settings can be checked. Any change of the settings were allowed only by B+V
adjustments may result in damage or severe personal injury.

4.2.6.1 Warning
Before any work is carried out wear your personal protection equipment. Especially leak oil
under pressure can cause severe personal injury to the eyes.

For adjustment work ensure that the quick disconnect couplings between the tool and control
console are properly connected.

4.2.6.2 Detailed functional description hydraulic system

Basis of the description is the hydraulic schematic Figure 15 / 16.

Function:

Pressure will be applied to the hydraulic operated Power Slip by using the hydraulic supply.

Rotary Slip lift up and down

Before operation of the PSH can be started, it must be properly installed into the rotary table.
To raise the slip, line B is pressurized and to lower the slip, line A is pressurized with the
hydraulic pressure specified in section 3.2.
The hydraulic system has been optimally preset by Blohm+Voss GmbH and should not be
changed.

For the PSH with Feedback, a roller pushbutton valve is actuated in the upper and lower end
position of the jib. Both valves pass the volume flow into the C line. Depending on where the
pressure is applied, the operator receives a signal from the control unit allowing him to see
whether the jib is up or down.

16
TECHNICAL DOCUMENTATION PSH 150

4.2.6.3 Basic hydraulic settings

The basic setting guarantee a complete function of the Power Slip for 120 bar (2030 PSI) to
210 bar (3045 PSI) working pressure and 22,7 - 37,9 l/min (6 - 10 GPM) flow rate.

It’s possible to regulate the engaging and extending speed or forces of hydraulic cylinders.
That’s require when the flow rate or working pressure is lower than the adjusted power
required.

Procedure:

1. Disconnecting the 4 fixing screws and remove the protection cover of hydraulic block

4.3 Manual Adjustments

To reduce the lifting height of the slip, regulate the

adjustment screw. When you unscrew the adjustment
screw, the lifting distance is larger.

4.3.1 Manual Lifting in Case of an Emergency

If the Power Slip PSH 150 can not be lifted by hydraulic oil, use the retaining link to lift up the
Power Slip manually, ( operated with a loop lever ). Open the Hydraulic Line before !
Use Eye Protection !!

6 Inspections

6.1 Routine – Daily Field Inspection

Visual Field Inspection of the Power Slip PSH 150 in an operating condition should be made
by the crew or the sup visor on a regular daily basis.

6.2 Semi - Annual Field Inspection

A through on the Job shutdown Inspection should be made on a periodic basis typically at 6
months intervals, or special circumstances may require.
It is advisable, that after Field Inspection should be made a record, stating the extent of
testing and testing results.

6.3 Inspection
A thorough inspection should be carried out periodically (every 3 months) or special
circumstances may require.

At the beginning of inspection, disconnect the hydraulic system and remove all components
(dirt, paint, lubricating oil, scale, etc.) from surface by a suitable method.

After a field inspection, it is advisable to record the extent of testing and testing results.

If cracks, excessive wear etc. is recognised, contact Blohm + Voss Oil Tools or an
authorised service company.

6.4 Inspection of Hydraulic System

Check for leakage every day.

Should internal or external leakage reach an unacceptable high level, contact Blohm + Voss
Oil Tools or an authorised service company.

6.5 Dismantling Inspection

- Generally, when the equipment returns to base, warehouse, etc. carry out the PSH 150
inspection, immediately. Furthermore, control it prior to its being sent on the next job.

- The PSH 150 should be dismantled and inspected in a suitably equipped facility for
excessive wear, cracks, flaws or deformations.

- Corrections should be made in accordance with recommendations, which can be

obtained from Blohm + Voss Oil Tools.

- When need is shown in a field inspection, dismantle the PSH 150 and arrange an
inspection in a suitably equipped facility.

- Springs should be carefully visually inspected for excessive wear and obvious weakness.
