Linking verbs do not show action.

Instead, they link the subject with a word or words in


the predicate that tell something about the subject. Linking verbs are forms of the verb
be and verbs such as seem and become.
appear – feel – grow – look – prove –
Verbs that show actions are called action verbs. remain – smell – sound – taste – turn
Examples If the above words can be substituted
with am, are, is the words are linking
Action verb: The skier ran down the mountain.

Underline or high light the verbs or verb phrases and write at the end of the sentence

1. Most people drink coffee or tea every day.

5. A snake will go for anything nearing it.

6. The girl looked great in the red dress.

7. I tasted the soup.

10. He stayed calm all evening.

11. She appeared in the door as soon as they


made a sound.
12. The cheese smells disgusting.

13. Duncan will steal third base as soon as the


ball is played.
14. She grew into a fine young woman.
