Good Evening Everybody, I am Azri Azmi bin Abd Aziz, a
teacher at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seri Perling Johor Bahru, Johor State of Malaysia. For your information, I am also a Theater Technical Officer at the Johor State Education Department since 2014 until now.
I started teaching since 2001 until now, I have gained a lot of
experience in conducting theater activities in the School with some success at the State, National and International Levels.
Talking about involvement in the field of theater I’ve started
leads in several genres of High School theater for my students more courage to communicate, have a high level of self-confidence, the challenges I face in the early stages are very high with time constraints and the task of a teacher who is always busy with teaching assignments and extra classes, yet with time management I was able to produce some quality productions for the students.
Last year, when we facing the pandemic of Covid19, the
whole world have difficulties in curriculum together with the academic. In Malaysia, the students still can join the activities. our ministry of education still encourage the students to join the program offers at national level. I personnel guide the students to join two programs which is at the first time ever, under online program . Thanks god, we made it successfully. We managed the perform two online theater and we got gold medal for Roselle and silver medal for Mentera Megat Putra
Talking about reviews in two theaters that I staged last year,
namely Roselle through the Jom Teater Sekolah Menengah National Level Program and Sumpah Megat Putera in the National Level Secondary School Theater Competition 2020 is a success in further developing students' talents besides peeling storytelling through staging two theater productions. this. Megat Putera's oath is critically evaluated from the perspective of a theatrical performance, it turns out that this theater can achieve its staging objectives as expected by art activists because it is a simple but meaningful script for me as a Screenwriter and director. A mark of high recognition appreciating all the sacrifices and perseverance of the students in raising the name of the state of Johor to the National Level so this competition is respected and revered in the eyes of all theater teachers, Sumpah Megat Putera is a theater that has a patriotic element about the greatness of a prince who has betrayed his love for one's evil deeds, because of this frustration Megat Putera decided to curse the descendants of his ex -fiance if he colonized his feet to his country, then he would vomit blood.
The main problem of the Megat Putera Oath script is on its
genre. It does not deserve to be categorized as a comedy or melodrama genre because its protagonist is a character, wanting to be portrayed as a distinguished character who has gone through a lot of sacrifices and obstacles to achieve his goals. Due to this feature, the script of Megat Putera's Oath is suitable for the genre of tragedy. The protagonist in a tragedy genre script is usually a person who is well known in his community with superior achievements (according to Banham 1990). The protagonist in a tragedy genre drama script should be highlighted with a weakness in the form of desires, dreams, ambitions, goals, habits or excessive attitudes that influence all his actions (actions) to achieve the main goal of the character. This weakness should be an obstacle to the protagonist in achieving his goal, from the beginning to the end of the plot. These obstacles will exist as small crises which in turn give birth to a major crisis at the climax stage of the plot and eventually cause a change of fate on the protagonist character. The small and large crises faced by the protagonist are very important in highlighting the superiority of his main character. These desires, dreams, ambitions, goals, habits or attitudes can only be in a positive or negative form for the genre of tragedy. What is important is, it should be so outrageous as to threaten the achievement of the main goal of the protagonist. At the climax stage, when the protagonist is faced with a major crisis, the character will face defeat and subsequently experience a change of fate at the end of the plot (plot resolution stage).
From the audience's point of view, throughout the staging of
the tragedy genre theater, the audience should always feel worried and sorry for the small crises faced by the protagonist. The concern and pity of this audience will accumulate from the beginning of the story to the climax stage. Only when the protagonist faces a permanent defeat and faces a change of fate, then all the worries and pity held by the audience will finally dissipate. This journey and process of emotional resolution is known as emotional catharsis.
Examination of the Oath of Megat Putera based on the
application of the genre confirms that the script genre is the cause of the failure of this theater to portray the character of MEGAT PUTERA as a superior character. The main weakness of the protagonist in Megat Putera’s Oath is his love for his fiance and his goal to tie the engagement ropes with a desire that covers all aspects including the social and political of the two kingdoms.
The Roselle Theater, is on the other hand, tells of Mr. Rafail's
obsession with his creations who are more concerned with perfection in producing the handiwork of his creator, but because of his excitement, his sculptures began to revolt due to the injustice applied by his creator. In my opinion a good script will present the first crisis as early as possible in staging. This will make the audience continue to be interested in following the actions of the actors until the end of the story.
Overall, only the Scenes in Roselle on me managed to portray
the protagonist and antagonist characters with full artistry. The Puncak Dramatic scene depicts the fury of the statues and the creator's punishment to the creation material has a profound effect on the Creator's special creation statues, the Protagonist clearly faces a crisis to achieve his goal because the way of communicating is not excessive sometimes does not contribute to the main goal of the Creator Character Tuan Rafail.
As a climax for Roselle, the Final Episode affects the emotions
and intellectuals of the audience. It features a crisis that really undermines the main goal of this storytelling. The director's artistic choices such as background music, lyrics, movement style and choreography are very precise and accurate to reveal the crisis faced by the protagonist.
The scene also managed to evoke a sense of concern and pity
for the characters among the audience. These artistic choices in terms of set and costume backgrounds add value to the audience’s visuals of the characters being translated on stage.
This final episode for Roselle presents a resolution to the
crisis between Mr. Rafail’s personal goals and the state of the Umbrellas protesting the Roselle statue. In this scene Mr. Rafail’s decision is actually the defeat of his own character in this theater.
Sinography angle in this staging is very important because in
modern theater, sinography plays an important role in terms of Set Position, Props, Makeup, Lighting and Sound System so that it gives an impact to the audience directly.
Here is a little I can share with you all, producing a theatrical
production cannot be done without planning and needs to be carried out with consistent work results in bringing the script to the stage.
