ASSIGNMENT (MARCH SEM 2024) CLB10904

INSTRUCTION: Answer ALL questions.

Question 1

A feed rate of 100 mol/h of an equimolar mixture of ethanol (E), propanol (P), and butanol (B)
is separated in a distillation column into two streams. The overhead stream (distillate)
contains 2/3 ethanol and no butanol. The bottom stream is free of ethanol.
i. Draw and label the process flowchart.
(3 marks)
ii. Perform the degree of freedom analysis
(2 marks)
iii. Calculate the molar flow rates and compositions of the overhead and bottom
streams.
(7 marks)

Question 2

A combustion process of 50 mol/s of iron pyrites (FeS2) with 75 mol/s of air is producing ferric
oxide (Fe2O3) and sulfur trioxide (SO3) gases. The reaction occurs as in the equation below,

2FeS2 + 15/2 O2 Fe2O3 + 4SO3

i. Draw and label the process flowchart

(3 marks)
ii. Identify the limiting reactant of the process.
(4 marks)
iii. Calculate the percentage of excess of the other reactant.
(4 marks)
iv. Estimate the extent of reaction, ξ if the complete reaction occurred.

Question 3

n-Hexane (C6H14) gas at 25C and 1 atm is combusted with excess air (assume air consists
of 21 mol% O 2 and the balance N 2) in a catalytic reactor as shown in Figure 2. Air has been
preheated to 350C, and fed to the reactor at 1 atm. The reactor has two output streams
emerges at 750C and 1 atm. Analysis of the dry product gas shows a composition of 13.31
mol% CO2, 85.13 mol% N2, and O2 with its total rate of 157.75 mol/hr.

100 % C6H14 (n1 mol/hr)

Dry Product Gas

Air (n2 mol/hr)

100% H2O vapor (n3 mol/hr)

(a) Solve n1, n2, and n3 as showed in Figure 2 using atomic species balance.

Question 4

An equimolar liquid mixture of n-pentane and n-hexane at 80°C and 5 atm is fed into an
evaporator at a rate of 100 mol/s. When the feed is exposed to the reduced pressure in
the evaporator, a substantial amount is vaporized. The temperature in the tank and outlet
streams is maintained at 65°C by adding heat. The liquid product stream contains 41 mol%
n-pentane and the vapor product stream contains 56 mol% n-pentane. The pressure of the
outlet stream is 1 atm.

(a) Draw and label the process flowchart

(3 marks)
(b) Determine the molar flowrate of the vapor product and liquid product.
