Pattern of idea development refers to the structure of writing on how the ideas are
being presented. Five of the commonly used patterns of idea development are discussed in
this module. These are the general to particular, cause and effect, claim-counterclaim,
problem-solution, and persuasion. Let us explore them and their appropriate grammatical
signals.

What is cause and effect pattern?
This pattern of idea development explains the causes or the effects of something.
When a writer presents reasons, he or she is explaining the causes. When a writer explains
the results, he or she is explaining the effects.
Cause and effect is a pattern of idea development that discusses either the reason
for an occurrence or predicted consequences of an occurrence.

Here are some of the grammatical signals that can be used for cause-and-effect
pattern of idea development:

E. APPLICATION
ACTIVITY: Finding Cause-Effect in Pictures
Mechanics: The students will be divided into four. Each group will be assigned to discuss a
picture and let them determine the cause and effect in the pictures given using grammatical
signals that indicate cause and effect. There should be one group representative to present their
output in the class.
