3-MCPDE and GE have been around for decades
− But have gained more attention in recent years
Glycidyl esters (GE) detected in palm oil but 3-MCPDs and GEs not
2008 found in virgin oils
EFSA sets the tolerable daily intake for 3-MCPDs at 2 µg/kg body
Jan 2018 weight/day (0.002 ppm/kg body weight)
GE (Glycidyl Esters)
• Genotoxic and carcinogenic (can damage DNA & cause cancer)*
• Formed rapidly >220oC at long retention time
• Main pre-cursor Diacylglycerides (DAG)
• Can be removed by direct stripping or post-refining
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) announced that all edible refined oils,
vanaspati, bakery shortening, margarines, vegetable fat spreads and mixed fat spreads may only
contain 3 per cent or less trans fats by January 2021 and 2 per cent or less trans fats by January
2022. This is an important milestone since the World Health Organisation (WHO) has called for
global elimination of trans fat by 2023.
