And we are researchers po, ma'am, from Bicol University College of Education. We are a group po who is
interested to learn about the challenges encountered by the elementary teachers in teaching music

and what are the coping mechanisms to address the identified challenges. You are being asked to
participate in this research study voluntarily. We will not share your name or any information that
reveals your identity

when reporting the results of this research. You will not be asked to sign any forms. With your
permission, we will make an audio recording of the interview. This recording will be used for research
purposes only.

The research group will keep what you say confidential. The information regarded from this interview
will be used to determine what recommendations may be proposed to the teachers to address the
different challenges experienced.

You can decide whether you will participate and you may stop anytime. As you speak, we will take notes
to capture the data we need. Your effectiveness as a teacher will not be evaluated.

So please relax and speak as you usually do. We will conduct the interview for 20 to 30 minutes. For
the...

For the... This is not related to our interview but I want to ask you first, ma'am. What grade level have
you experienced teaching music, ma'am?

Grade 1 all throughout my 28 years. Grade 1. Grade 1, ma'am. And also, ma'am, second one, in one
sentence, ma'am, how do you feel about teaching music, ma'am?

Challenging. Challenging. Challenging. Sabi niya po, ma'am, na challenging. In what... In what way niya
po, ma'am, you feel that way po? Challenging in a sense na...

The teacher should... should try to further study how to...

to further study how to deliver the lesson well, gather some materials, instructional materials, producing
instructional materials, and...

what else? Coping up with the level of learners. Yes, po. Thank you, po, ma'am. So, for our interview
proper po talaga, ma'am, first question,

what challenges have you encountered in teaching music, po, ma'am, in terms of singing? In terms of
singing, I have my own ability to sing. Okay. So, I can sing.
You can sing. Singing is not a problem. So, in listening naman po, ma'am, in terms of teaching, yung
listening po, ma'am...

Listening in the part of the learners? No, po, ma'am. In listening po, ma'am, when it comes to music po,
ma'am, di ba po, ma'am, in first stages po, ma'am, yung listening? So, kung...

po, ma'am, when it comes to listening? The response. Responsing po. So,

the third one po, ma'am, is the creative work. Yung creative work po, ma'am, means that when you are
in music po, ma'am,

how you create something that related to music? More on example, a song, then creating something

while listening to the song. For example, you can draw. Yes, ma'am. Challenges. For me? For the
learners? For me? For you, ma'am.

Challenges is for the level of the learners, and how they can understand me as a teacher. Okay, ma'am.

So, for the instrumental work po, ma'am. So, for the instrumental work po, ma'am. Instrumental-wise, I
don't know how to work. I play some instrument.

Example, guitar. I cannot play guitar.

So, I depend only to to to downloading songs to downloading songs and my own voice.

So, thank you po, ma'am. So, for the movement po, ma'am. So, thank you po, ma'am. So, for the
movement po, ma'am. I can do it. At the very start, as a

teacher, we should be flexible. Maybe I was given a talent to dance and to sing. But playing instrument,
yes.

So, you say po, ma'am, na wala ka pong challenges when it comes to movement. Movement, yes. So, we
move to ay, in what instant po na you feel that it is really

challenging on your part as a teacher po?
instrumental work. Sa instrumental kasi, there are times that

sa lesson, ano yan, you need to to use musical instrument. But how can I deliver if I don't
know? Yes, po. So, example, if you are teaching the, simply grade 1, basic lang nila.

So, yung mga notes, sometimes it's not enough that you are going to say the notes to your voice.

It's better na you can use some musical instrument that they can't hear by themselves.

Yun, yun ang difficulty, lalo yung this part. So, another question po, ma'am. What did you observe po,
ma'am, among your students po, ma'am,

when you are on yourself po, na nang-challenge po kayo po doon sa aspect na instrumental work po?
Pardon, pa.

What did you observe among students po, ma'am, when you are challenging in that aspect po? Of
course, the children nowadays are aware.

Sometimes, they look at you. And they know that you are not prepared.

You are not aware, you doesn't know how to deliver the lesson.

And so, children nowadays are observant to the way teachers deliver the lesson. Yes, po, ma'am. Thank
you, po, ma'am.

And for the second question po, ma'am, what challenges have you encountered po, ma'am, in terms of
planning the lesson po?

For planning the lesson, we follow the route 1, meaning teacher first. Teacher follow, the pupils first.

And they can do it by themselves.

So, in preparing the lesson, we strictly follow the proper way of teaching music to the children.

In
what way ka po, ma'am, na-challenge? In planning out. Opo. In planning out.

In planning out the lesson, i-coconsider mo yung mga needs mo.

If to make the lesson more interesting, we should gather some, nowadays, we use some PowerPoint
videos.

So, at my age na, I'm not so aware of that. So, challenge. Natchallenge ako kasi. I should try to...

Browse up some videos that can help my lesson. And also, gathering up some materials that can support
my lesson.

Implementing.
The truth is... One of the subjects that we, I, we talk it over with some of my co-teachers. And we
really...

What can you say that? We are not so... So much... Is it happening? It...

The least subject that we would like to teach is music. Maybe it's because...

For us, it may not be appealing because we are preoccupied with academic subjects.

Because music is only part of mapping. And it will only take one day per week to deliver the said subject.

So, if given the time... It will only take a bit of our time. But...

We only have a few minutes in one week. Kaya...

Since it will only take a minute, it is not very... What do you call that?

You can speak po, ma'am, Tagalog, ma'am, if you are comfortable po. Okay. Na... Mas...

Because we are under pressure
nowadays, especially grade 1, with academic.

More on grade 1, we focus in reading. So partly na lang music. Part of math lang siya. Okay po, ma'am.

And I am not, I don't specialize in music.

For the third grade, po, ma'am, what resources, po, ma'am, do you need to teach the subject, po,
ma'am? What do you mean the resources?

Resources, po, ma'am, it is, for example, po, ma'am, instructional materials or musical instruments.

Okay, in grade 1, as I said, music, we only teach music, basic. More on?

More on makusog na tanog, maluyang tanog, pagpamidid kang nota, tempo, dynamics.

Kaya we only need.

So, simple, simple instructional materials, available, like stick, bao, even tapping by themselves, creating

And nowadays, of course, with the help of PowerPoint.

The help of some, ano yan, some, um, uh, audio-video downloads sa mga apps, yun ang ginagamit
namin.

So, instructional wise, available, yung available dun, that they can bring. Especially, more on, the help of
nature.
So, um.

gamitin?

And, challenge po ba kayo na, um, Oo, kasi unavailable yun. So, though we would like to have them,
unavailable yun kasi.

For example, we would like to have guitars, we would like to have drums.

But, we prepare na yung mga kaya lang gamitin ng mga bata, practical wise. If the school can provide,
why not?

Of course, mga instrument, pwede nila kaming turuan.

So, for the, um, fourth question po, ma'am, um, um, among all the challenges po, ma'am, na, na
mention nyo po, ma'am, kanina, um, what do you think are the reasons for these challenges po, ma'am,
in teaching music? Siguro, number one,

Yung ano po, ma'am? Willingness. Oo.

The teacher's willingness to face the challenges na yung sa music.

Sometimes kasi, kahit may challenges. Dahil na music is only part of, we don't give more emphasis,
concentration. Okay.

Okay.

Then, number two is, the level of learners and how we can impart the lesson. Kasi, may mga learners
kasi na,

some are not interested, some are interested. So, challenge sa amin yung, yung makuha yung attention.
And number one,

and press support of the school. And of the parent. Number one, parent, kasi, pag pinagpadala namin
ng, halimbawa, magdala ng stick,

yung parent, di naman nagpadala. Anything that you can produce the sound. Yes, that is the thing. And
of course, challenges pa rin yung, yung mag,

you will take time to download and kung available ang mga, yung mga TV. Kasi may mga school na they
can not, they cannot afford kahit speaker.
tunog,

mga bagay. Kasi doon ang basic eh. Kung ang mga bata, wala namang papakinggan. So it is best na

yun ang challenge is na take time to download, take time to browse up, take time to learn more. Siguro
kailangan rin to go back to the basic.

load.

We only take little of our time. Pero given a chance, kasi kailangan talaga pag sinabi mong music, ang
magtuturon teacher,

you specialize music teacher. Para mateliver niya yung tama. And even now, sa grade 1, meron kami isa.
And we tell them, ikaw na lang,

lahat ng grade 1, ikaw magturo para effective. Kasi you have the talent, you have the marunong ka sa
mga instrument, madideliver mo siya. Kami, we only teach what we know.

If we have little that we know, we impart little too.

pagtuturo. And yung mga new ones,

they have more knowledge, more capability, and more resources that they can give to children. Dapat,
yun. Kasi dito, may mga school kasi na

ikaw lang lahat ng music. Okay? Ikaw lang lahat. Tapos, last year, merong nagturo sa amin. Try na lang
namin yun.

May isang teacher sa MAPE. Kaya, di kami nagturo. Pero, considering, given a chance, kung bibigyan pa

ko talaga to go back to the basic.

yung sa skills po, ma'am, yung sa singing, listening, creative work, instrumental work, and movements.
Challenges. What do you think po, ma'am, is the
reason behind those, um, challenges po, ma'am,
when it comes to skills?

ng more, seminars, more training, but we,

only given, for 2018, here, once lang, kami nag-training.

magiging more effective, and,

yung mga challenges namin, magiging lesser. Kasi yung, magiging, ang, ang, kuha namin, maganda yung
magiging product namin, kasi, meron kami,

meron kami, ability, yung challenge namin, kaunti nalang, yun daw. Ah, yes po, ma'am, thank you po,
ma'am. And, also po, ma'am, for the next question,

um, how do you cope up with the challenges po, ma'am, when you encountered po, ma'am, in terms of
skills?

ma-i-fot ka talaga na, ano yan, you are not contented na dun lang. Every lesson may, may discovery. So,
at least,

madi-discover mo lang, I'm improving, so my teaching is improving, my skills is improving. Listening wise,
siguro,

ano yan, listening, creative work, creative work, siguro, mag-ikalangpuan, um, think of things that

interest the learners. Okay. Mag- impound ka ng
knowledge mo. Iisip ka na,

what, what other things that will make your lesson, very interesting, to the grade 1. I-level up mo din sa
grade level,

And, how do you cope
up,
when it comes to, um, instructional delivery ko, sa mga challenges ko? Sa mga challenges, so, I already, I
try to adapt

the trend. Though, mahirap, pero, I tried na, use PowerPoint already.

I buy my own speaker. Hihihi. Para, para, to listen to some sounds. Kasi, yun ang, kailangan ng mga bata.
Then,

I buy my own, I buy my own instrument, like
maracas.

Just to show them, these are the musical instrument. And, try some, ah, print. Print, ah, some
instructional materials.

Kasi, obsolete na yung mga ganyan, diba? Yung printed ko yan. Nowadays, we deliver, with the use of
PowerPoint, ina-adapt ko na rin siya.

I don't take for less. I explore. And, procure to myself, materials needed.

Without the help of, kasi, lagi-lagi mo na yung gagamitin. As a teacher, dapat meron kang, meron kang,
ah,

meron ka doon na, ugali na, you should have money to procure something. Kasi, matagal mo yung
gagawin,

matagal mo yung gagamitin. And, ah, I'm trying my, siguro, yung ukilele, try ko yun.

Kasi, nai-interest ako. May teacher na, previously, old na siya. Nakita ko, ang ganda. Siguro, taking time.
But now, preoccupied talaga kami ng academic.

observations.

That's how we're doing our best. And, I try to improve myself every year. Tapos, eh, depende sa level of
learning. And,

on ano po, ma'am? Number 6. Kailangan po, ma'am. Um, early year po, ma'am, nagsabi ka po, ma'am,
na mga, um, some, coping mechanism.

So, ngayon po, ma'am, then, in what ways have they been helpful for you, ma'am? Great help. Kasi, it
will make my lesson easy. My lesson more interesting.

Kasi, pag very interesting ang lesson mo, the learners will learn easy.

So, there
should be a surprise.
Everyday. Kahit na, kuman ka si teacher, kahit pa off, do it. Tao lang tayo. Minsan, pag, pag,

kumakanta, ah, children, sing with me. Do, do things with me. And for the last question na po namin,
ma'am, ah,

what other challenges have you encountered in teaching music po, ma'am? May, pwede ka pa po,
So, challenges
wise, po, ah,

yun lang, medyo, kailangan lang, refresher. Kasi nga, yung mga learn, learn namin, yung mga napag-
aralan namin is,

kailangan ng dagdagan. I-update po. I-update mo. Then, another one is, kasi nga,

we are following lesson class already. Siguro, we should not try to stick to it. I-impound mo, mag-create
ka pa in another way na more appealing.

So, kasi new teachers, may ready na kaming lesson.

So, and pag like mo

ang music, like rin nila. Alam nila yun.

the teacher is teaching. So, na
nandyan, titingnan ka, pero kung naramdaman nila

si teacher, parang napipilitan, they will not, they will not interact with you. Pero, pag interesting, even
them, mayroon nila,

Diba?

Yes. Nandoon yung, yung
